Multiple Tractor or Sheet Feed Support for the IBM or InfoPrint 4247 Printer

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document explains how to print to the multiple attachments of an IBM 4247 Printer.

Resolving The Problem

This document contains the instructions for printing to the multiple attachments of an IBM or InfoPrint 4247 Printer.

4230/4224/4214 Emulation Mode - Automatic Sheet Feeder

oFor 4230/4214 emulation, if you want compatibility with existing applications that use the automatic sheet feeder, only have this one attachment on the printer.

For automatic sheet feeder, specify on the printer file FORMFEED(*AUTOCUT), DRAWER(N) where N is:

1 - For Drawer 1
2 - For Drawer 2
3 - For Drawer 3
4230/4224/4214 Emulation Mode - Multiple Attachments
oFor 4230/4214 emulation, when you have multiple attachments on the printer at the same time, the following should be specified:

For the automatic sheet feeder FORMFEED(*AUTOCUT), DRAWER(N) where N is:

5 - For Drawer 1
6 - For Drawer 2
7 - For Drawer 3
oFor 4247 front continuous forms attachment, specify on the printer file FORMFEED(*CONT).
oFor 4247 rear continuous forms attachment (V3R1 and V3R6), specify on the printer file FORMFEED(*AUTOCUT) DRAWER(2).
oFor 4247 rear continuous forms attachment (V3R2, V3R7, V4R1 or later), specify on the printer file FORMFEED(*AUTOCUT) DRAWER(2).
4247 Mode
oFor 4247 mode, this is the same as the 4230/4214 emulation with multiple attachments -- FORMFEED(*AUTOCUT), DRAWER(N) where N is:

5 - For Drawer 1
6 - For Drawer 2
7 - For Drawer 3
oFor 4247 front continuous forms attachment, specify on the printer file FORMFEED(*CONT).
oFor 4247 rear continuous forms attachment (V3R1 and V3R6), specify on the printer file FORMFEED(*AUTOCUT) DRAWER(2).
oFor 4247 rear continuous forms attachment (V3R2, V3R7, V4R1 or later), specify on the printer file FORMFEED(*AUTOCUT) DRAWER(2).
Using the QWP4019 Program to Set the Printer Model

If auto-config is used to configure a printer device description for an IBM 4247 printer, it will be configured as a 4214-2 printer; however, a flag will be set in the device description that indicates that it is actually a 4247 printer. To turn off this flag (so the operating system will consider this to be a 4214-2 printer) or if the printer device description was manually configured and this flag must be turned on (so the operating system will consider this to be a 4247 printer), use the QWP4019 program.

The QWP4019 program resides in library QSYS. Running this program manipulates flags in the printer device description. Because the flags are stored in the device description, this program must be run only one time for each device and each function. The flags can be changed only by running this program or by deleting and re-creating the device description.

Note: The print writer for the device should be restarted after the QWP4019 program has been called to guarantee that the function is enabled.

To ensure the operating system considers the printer to be an IBM 4247 printer (so it will override the printer settings by sending the tractor feed or sheet feed request with every spooled file), run the following command:

CALL QWP4019 (printername *OF4214)

To ensure the operating system considers the printer to be an IBM 4214-2 printer (so it will not override the printer settings with every spooled file), run the following command:

CALL QWP4019 (printername *ON4214)

To verify the current status of the printer device description, run the following command:

CALL QWP4019 (printername *CHECK)
