VM/MVS Bridge (NJE) Undocumented Additional Parameter Information

Problem

This lists additional undocumented NJE parameter information, including how we calculate primary and secondary node names.

Resolving The Problem

The following items need to be documented in Appendix D, Configuring OS/400 VM/MVS Bridge Support for MVS/JES of the AS/400 Distribution Services Network Guide, SC41-9588-02.

oThe maximum RU size supported by VM/MVS Bridge is 2048. A larger value may be specified in the TPBUFS2 parameter, but it will be negotiated down to 2048. (This should also be documented in Chapter 6, Virtual Machine/Multiple Virtual Storage Bridge, of the same manual.)

The text should be: The NJE TPDEF lists the buffer size as maximum RU length, 512, 1024, and so on. The IBM OS/400 or IBM i5/OS system lists its MAXFRAME values with the SNA header included, such as 521, 1033, and so on. Make sure the OS/400 or i5/OS system also includes the 9-byte SNA header.
oBecause the OS/400 or i5/OS system does not support Network Path Manager (NPM), if the host system is configured to use NPM, the host system must be the NJE primary node. The OS/400 Node Definition must always specify PATHMGR=NO in the Host Definitions.
oIf multi-leaving (concurrently transferring multiple streams on the same BSC connection or SNA session) is being used, the OS/400 or i5/OS system must be the NJE primary node.
oIf BSC protocol is being used, the NJE primary node is the node that receives the DLE ACK0 BSC control record. If SNA protocols are being used, the NJE primary node is determined by the EBCDIC value of the node names. The one with the higher value is the primary node.

The EBCDIC value of a node name is calculated by giving a numeric value to each of the numbers and letters in the name. Both numbers and letters have ascending values (9 is worth more than 0 and Z is worth more than A), and numbers have a higher value than letters.

Following are some examples (for an SNA network):

1 OS/400 node name = NODE1
Host node name = NODE2 <--- primary node, 2 > 1

2 OS/400 node name = ANODE
Host node name = BNODE <--- primary node, B > A

3 OS/400 node name = NODE1
Host node name = 2NODE <--- primary node, 2 > N
oThe OS/400 or i5/OS MAXFRAME value also includes the 9-byte SNA header value, but the host system does not. Therefore, when the OS/400 or i5/OS system is set up for 521 bytes, for example, the host system is set up for 512, and so on.
