Resolving The Problem
This document contains a list of recommended values for the Remote Printer Queue (RMTPRTQ) parameter when using a Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ) or the Send TCP/IP Spooled File (SNDTCPSPLF) command to print using the TCP/IP LPR/LPD.

- Information Concerning Axis Print Servers
There is a known issue with Axis print servers not properly closing an LPR/LPD connection after printing a spooled file from a System i system which could result in spooled files staying in SND (Sending) status and printing repeatedly. This issue has been addressed by the latest firmware for Axis print servers. If experiencing this issue, download the latest firmware from the following Web site, and verify that this resolves the problem: www.axis.com/techsup/firmware.php
- Information Concerning WYSE and UNISYS 3000 Series Terminals
Support for LPR/LPD printing has been added to WYSE Winterm and Unisys WInPath 3000 Series Terminals through a firmware upgrade. The terminal's firmware must be at level 348_4 or higher to configure LPD on the terminal and LPD must be configured before a Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ) will be able to send OS/400 or i5/OS spooled files to a printer attached to a 3000 Series terminal. Contact either WYSE or Unisys for assistance with checking the firmware level or getting a firmware upgrade. Once the 3000 Series Terminal is at the proper firmware level, the following steps can be taken to configure LPD on the terminal:
1. Press F2 to invoke the Terminal Properties dialog box. 2. Click on the Devices tab. 3. Click on the LPD icon in the icon container. This will bring up the LPD Config dialog box. 4. Check the Enable Printer box to enable a printer connected to the terminal. 5. Type the Printer Name (the default is 'Noname'). 6. Leave the Port set to 515. Note: This is the standard port for LPR/LPD and the only one that will work with an IBM® iSeries™ family of servers RMTOUTQ. 7. Leave the Send Form Feed box unchecked. 8. Click on the OK button. Note: This is provided as a convenience and is derived from the WYSE Winterm 3000 Series Windows-based Terminal Administrators Guide. This document is available on the WYSE Web site at www.wyse.com. For further assistance with configuring LPD on the terminal, contact WYSE or Unisys. Once LPD has been configured on the terminal and a printer name has been assigned, set the Remote Print Queue (RMTPRTQ) value in the RMTOUTQ. The print queue name is case-sensitive, and the RMTPRTQ value must match it. If using lowercase letters, use single quotation marks (') when specifying the RMTPRTQ value.
- Information Concerning Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows 2003 Server and Windows XP Professional
When configuring a Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ) to a PC running Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows 2003 Server, or Windows XP Professional, the following conditions must be met:
1. The printer must be configured within Windows. 2. The Windows print queue must be shared. 3. The Guest user must be enabled on the PC. 4. The TCP/IP Printing Service must be installed and started on the PC. It is also recommended that these be set up to start automatically rather than manually. Note: The TCP/IP Printing Service or Print Service for Unix is an optionally installed component of Windows, and therefore may have to be installed by going into the Windows Control Panel, double-clicking on Add/Remove Programs, clicking on Add/Remove Windows Components and installing the proper component. In Windows 2000, the TCP/IP Printing Service is installed by selecting the Other Network File and Print Services component and the Print Services for Unix subcomponent. 5. The RMTOUTQ must be configured with the Remote system (RMTSYS) parameter set to the host name of the Windows NT Server or the Windows 2000 Server or with the RMTSYS parameter set to *INTNETADR and the Internet address (INTNETADR) parameter set to the TCP/IP address of the Windows NT Server or the Windows 2000 Server. 6. The RMTOUTQ must also be configured with the Remote printer queue (RMTPRTQ) parameter set to the share name of the printer on the Windows NT Server. This parameter is case-sensitive. Note: The Print Services for Unix component is not available with all versions of Windows. If this is unavailable, a third-party Line Printer Daemon (LPD) program must be installed and configured on the Windows PC. Once this is done, refer to the section on Information Concerning Using a Third-Party Line Printer Daemon (LPD) Program below.
- Information Concerning Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista and Windows 7
When configuring a Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ) to a PC running Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista and Windows 7, the following conditions must be met:
1. The printer must be configured within Windows. 2. The Windows print queue must be shared. 3. The Guest user must be enabled on the PC. 4. The LPD protocol must be enabled within Windows. Note: This can be done by selecting the "Programs and Features" pane within the Windows Control Panel, clicking on "Turn Windows Features on or off", and then turning on the LPD Print Service. - Information Concerning Using a Third-Party Line Printer Daemon (LPD) Program
Windows™ 95, Windows™ 98, and Windows™ ME (and certain versions of Windows™ 2000) do not contain a Line Printer Daemon (LPD) utility. In these cases, a third-party LPD program must be installed and configured on the PC. Once this is done, the following conditions must be met:
1. The printer must be configured in the third-party Line Printer Daemon (LPD) program and be assigned an LPD queue. 2. It is recommended that the third-party LPD program be set up to start automatically rather than manually. 3. The RMTOUTQ must be configured with the Remote system (RMTSYS) parameter set to the host name for the PC or with the RMTSYS parameter set to *INTNETADR and the Internet address (INTNETADR) parameter set to the TCP/IP address for the PC. 4. The RMTOUTQ must also be configured with the Remote printer queue (RMTPRTQ) parameter set to the name of the LPD queue configured in the third-party LPD program. This parameter is case-sensitive. - Information Concerning Print Servers Designed for Twinax SCS Printers
The Argecy ACC 6xe Coax/Twinax and I-O LAN RPC print servers are members of a special class of print servers designed to take twinax printers and attached them to a LAN or WAN. These printer servers take an ASCII data stream and convert them back to an EBCDIC or SCS for any twinax attached SCS printers. The I-O LAN RPC uses an Epson MFRTYPMDL setting, and the Argecy uses *WSCST with QWPDEFAULT.
- Information Concerning Panasonic WORKiO DP-C262 and DP-C322 Multiple Function Color Printers
An updated firmware version may be needed on the Panasonic WORKiO DP-C262 and DP-C322 color printer models when printing from the iSeries system, particularly when using a Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ), a *LAN 3812 SNMP or IPP device description, or a PC5250 printer session. For more information, refer to the following Rochester Support Center knowledgebase document:
Updated Firmware Version for Panasonic WORKiO DP-C262 and DP-C322 Color Printer Models - TCP/IP Ports Used by Line Printer Requester (LPR) in IBM i
For more information on the ports used by IBM i LPR/LPD, please refer to TCP/IP Ports Used by Line Printer Requester (LPR) in IBMi.
