How to determine who suppresses the SMF record?

Question & Answer

Question

We recently installed z/OS level and brought up our test system. Started task NET (VTAM) is receiving the following message: IST435I UNABLE TO RECORD ON TUNSTATS FILE, CODE= 20 This says that IEFU83 is suppressing the record. We specify IEFU83 in SMFPRMxx, but don't have our own version. I find no hits on IEFU83 in the migration guide or planning for install, and no hits in IBMLINK relevant to the IST435I. Any suggestions? Has IEFU83 changed? Did we miss something?

Answer

MSGIST435I does point to SMFWTM, and RC20 decimal (or RC14 hex), returned by SMFWTM, does point to the IEFU83 installation exit.
Actually, it is the only exit of IEFU8x installation exits that may be invoked by SMFWTM.

As it follows from the exit's name, it belongs to an installation; in other words, what you get from IBM in the IEFU83 load module is essentially an IEFBR14 code, i.e.,

IEFU83 CSECT
SR R15,R15
BR R14
END

Naturally, this particular code does not suppress SMF records ... Hence, you may need to look at the specific IEFU83 code, associated with the logical SYSSTC.IEFU83 exit.
I suggest to issue the following system command:
D PROG,EXIT,EN=SYSSTC.IEFU83,DIAG

The system will respond with the message similar to

CSV464I 12.12.33 PROG,EXIT DISPLAY 365
EXIT SYSSTC.IEFU83
MODULE STATE EPADDR LOADPT LENGTH JOBNAME
IEFU83 A 834A49C8 00000000 00000000 *
XIEFU83 A 82258780 00000000 00000000

In my example IEFU83 is the original BR14-like exit, but XIEFU83 is not; and the output gives me the entry point address of the module which is in common area. Therefore, I can start IPCS with the Source of ACTIVE (use Option 0 to set 'Source'), then move to Option 1 (Browse), and then use the address (2258780.) to check for any eye-catcher in the body of this XIEFU83. If there is one, it may give you an idea about the owner.
