Capturing or deploying a volume with a multi-member concantenated volume fails with EMC VMAX SMIS provider v8.1

Troubleshooting

Problem

A capture or deploy of a VM with multi-member concantenated volume from PowerVC fails if the VMAX SMIS provider used is v8.1. A multi-member concantenated volume could have been created due to a resize of the volume or it could have been created manually by the storage administrator.

Symptom

The capture or deploy volume action fails with error "Return code: 1. Error: The size of the Source device is not equal to the size of the Target device." in the cinder volume logs.

Cause

This happens because the VMAX driver cannot correctly identify a concatenated volume that uses SMIS v8.1.

Environment

PowerVC 1.2.3.3
This occurs when EMC VMAX storage is used with SMIS v8.1.

Diagnosing The Problem

The problem can be diagnosed by reviewing the cinder volume logs for this error: "Return code: 1. Error: The size of the Source device is not equal to the size of the Target device." A user can verify the problem by clicking on the volume link in PowerVC UI . On the bottom of the details page they can see if they have the multi-member concatenated problem by looking at the "Number of members" property. It will have a value greater than 1.

Resolving The Problem

Create a new single member volume of the proper size, then copy the data from the problematic volume to the new volume.
