Cloud Pak for Security: How to identify an overloaded hypervisor?

Question & Answer

Question

How to identify from the virtual operating system that the hypervisor is overloaded in Cloud Pak for Security?

Cause

Performance on the system isn't as expected, intermittent sporadic errors, and meeting the recommended system specifications. However, the hypervisor is overloaded or hitting set resource limits. These RTC interrupts are generated when the internal clock missed the hypervisor clock. Checking for RTC interrupt messages can confirm an overloaded hypervisor.

Answer

  1. You can verify whether the hypervisor is the cause by looking for RTC interrupt messages.

Checking the dmesg logs or messages for RTC errors:
    grep -i rtc /var/log/messages
kernel: hpet1: lost N rtc interrupts
  2. Contact your system hypervisor admin to troubleshoot performance as the hypervisor is over loaded.

NOTE: Most hypervisors have default limits or restrictors on resources so virtual machines (VMs) don't consume all resources and some is left over for hypervisor services and tasks. For example, some have a limit set to 75% usage for CPU, RAM, and disk. Just because it's not at 100% doesn't mean your hypervisor isn't overloaded.
