Abstract
After upgrading from IBM Spectrum Scale 5.1.2.0 through 5.1.2.3 or from 5.1.3.0 release to IBM Spectrum Scale 5.1.2.4, 5.1.2.5, 5.1.3.1, 5.1.4.0, or 5.1.4.1 releases users might get bad file handle issues. This issue might cause failure in accessing Ganesa NFS mounts.
Note: The file handle issue impacts NFS v4 mounts only and NFSv3 mounts are not affected.
Content
The bad file handle issue arises when the user upgrades to IBM Spectrum Scale 5.1.2.4, 5.1.2.5, 5.1.3.1, 5.1.4.0 or 5.1.4.1 from 5.1.2.0 through 5.1.2.3 or 5.1.3.0. Due to this bad file handle issue, the NFSv4 client throws "Unknown error 521” and fails to access NFS mount.
The bad file handle issue has been fixed for the upcoming IBM Spectrum Scale releases 5.1.2.6 and 5.1.5.
The users can resolve the bad file handle issue by directly upgrading from IBM Spectrum Scale 5.0.5.X, 5.1.0.X or 5.1.1.X to 5.1.2.4 or later PTFs: 5.1.3.1 or 5.1.4.0 or later PTFs.
Users Impacted:
All the users trying to upgrade to the IBM Spectrum Scale 5.1.2.4, 5.1.2.5, 5.1.3.1, 5.1.4.0 or 5.1.4.1 from 5.1.2.0 through 5.1.2.3 or 5.1.3.0 and using NFSv4 mounts.
Problem Determination:
To debug this bad file handle issue, capture the ganesha.log or tcpdump.
1. The following error message can be seen on the NFS client when a mount is broken:
# df -h
df: ‘/path/to/nfsmount’: Unknown error 521
2. In tcpdump, the reply frame will show file handle status as "NFS4ERR_BADHANDLE".
Example:
131.169.72.109 131.169.251.118 NFS 302 V4 Call (Reply in 175) GETATTR FH: 0x40d50974
131.169.251.118 131.169.72.109 NFS 186 V4 Reply (call in 174) Sequence | PUTFH Status: NFS4ERR_BADHANDLE
3. The following message can be seen in /var/log/ganesha.log
nfs4_Is_Fh_Invalid :FH :INFO :INVALID HANDLE: nfs_fh4_len=56, should be 53.
Recommendations:
1. Users on IBM Spectrum Scale 5.0.5.X, 5.1.0.X or 5.1.1.x are recommended to directly upgrade to 5.1.2.4, 5.1.3.1, 5.1.4.0 or later releases. This activity will skip the bad file handle issue.
2. Users who upgraded from IBM Spectrum Scale 5.1.2.0 through 5.1.2.3 or from 5.1.3.0 release to IBM Spectrum Scale 5.1.2.4, 5.1.2.5, 5.1.3.1, 5.1.4.0, or 5.1.4.1 releases are recommended to upgrade to upcoming releases 5.1.2.6 or later. If a user does not want to upgrade, they can request an efix.
Workaround:
1. If a user hits the bad file handle issue, they can unmount and re-mount the NFSv4 mount on NFS clients to resolve an issue.
