IBM Aspera support for iOS and Android

General Page

IBM Aspera is the primary mobile application for IBM Aspera Enterprise, IBM Aspera on Cloud, IBM Aspera Faspex 4, IBM Aspera Shares 1, IBM Aspera HSTS. It provides a simple view to perform transfers using IBM Aspera FASP from your mobile device.

This article covers common troubleshooting scenarios and how to contact IBM Aspera support.
Troubleshooting
Adding IBM Aspera HSTS Servers
When adding IBM Aspera HSTS servers directly it is recommended to proxy through a web server like NGINX or Apache that can front valid certs and use standard HTTPS port (443). When trying to connect directly to IBM Aspera Node (port 9092) you may find the app unable to connect on newer devices due to the TLS settings used for this setup. Proxying through a web server on 443 with valid certs for the domain should allow you to connect and perform transfers and browse files.
Upload only for IBM Aspera HSTS
When adding IBM Aspera HSTS servers that do not expose the IBM Aspera Node API or the IBM Aspera Node API does not have proper certificates you can use the "IBM Aspera HSTS (upload only)" option to upload to these IBM Aspera HSTS servers. For users who have been using the "IBM Aspera Uploader" app this may be the only option you can use; to support full IBM Aspera HSTS (browsing, downloading and uploading) contact your server administrator to see about getting the IBM Aspera Node API enabled and setup.  Support for IBM Aspera HSTS without IBM Aspera Node API is in IBM Aspera 1.0.1.
Finding downloaded files
Downloaded files live inside the application itself. You can access the list via the "Downloads" tab on the bottom. From that view you can choose to "Share" and move them to other locations on the device or to your image gallery. If you delete the application from your device these files are also deleted.
Sharing from other apps
You can share images, videos and certain media and document files to the IBM Aspera application. Go into any app that supports file sharing (Gallery, Files app...) and choose share on the items and select IBM Aspera from the list. You may need to customize the list if you do not see the option. Not all files can be shared via this method. If the IBM Aspera app does not open try opening the app yourself and select files through the app. Selecting files via the in-app file chooser should allow all files to be selected. This feature is available in 1.0.2.
Encrypted files
IBM Aspera Mobile can encrypt files when sending them with certain workflows. Packages for IBM Aspera on Cloud, IBM Aspera Faspex 5 and IBM Aspera Faspex 4 support Encryption At Rest (EAR) that allows you to enter a passphrase as you create the package and this will encrypt the files on send.
When you need to download an encrypted file from any IBM Aspera service you can do so by simply downloading the item and entering the passphrase when prompted. You will only be prompted when:
  • Downloading a package that is marked as encrypted. This is available in IBM Aspea on Cloud, IBM Aspera Faspex 4. This feature is available in 1.1.4. IBM Aspera Faspex 5 does not currently support decrypting full packages; however you can decrypt individual files from a package.
  • Downloading single or multiple files that are all encrypted. This means that all files that are checked and downloaded must be encrypted (has .aspera-env) file extension. Do not mix files encrypted with different passphrases or non-encrypted files with encrypted ones when downloading multiple items. This feature is available in 1.1.5.
Contacting Support
If you have a current support contract you can open a support ticket via IBM Support.  Otherwise you can email mobile support with feedback or issues you encounter using the app.  Please include information about your device (device brand, OS version....) as well as what IBM Aspera Server you are connecting to (URL, type, port).
