Enhancement of B2B Mail Client Adapter to access Microsoft Exchange Online with IMAP and OAuth 2.0

Newsletters

Abstract

Microsoft will permanently disable basic authentication of IMAP and POP3 protocols. If you use Microsoft Exchange Online, you need to use OAuth 2.0 for authentication and authorization.

Content

Microsoft will begin permanently disabling basic authentication of some of the protocols including IMAP and POP3 protocols effective from October 1, 2022. Basic authentication allows users to connect to a mailbox using only a username and a password. The reason behind stopping this is to prevent password spray attacks.
B2B Mail Client Adapter is implemented using JavaMail. Till now for authentication, you passed the user name and password in the properties of POP3 or IMAP protocols. However, with the OAuth 2.0 implementation, you need to make a request to the authorization point to get an access token. The access token is included in the request for connection to the mail provider. For more details, refer to Enhancing B2B Mail Client Adapter to access Microsoft Exchange Online with OAuth 2.0.
Note: B2B Mail Client Adapter supports OAuth 2.0 with IMAP only. If you use POP3, you need to migrate to IMAP with OAuth 2.0 to access Microsoft Exchange Online.
OAuth 2.0 feature will be implemented in the following IBM Sterling B2B Integrator versions:
