Installing an HMC corrective service package from a CD

The HMC is a closed system. All tasks are accomplished using the graphical user interface known as the HMC interface.

The Install Corrective Service task allows you to apply individual corrective service (specific fixes or PTFs) to the HMC by using removable media (CDs).

Before you begin, download the ISO image for the specific fix from the Downloads page for your HMC version:

Version 6.1.3 fixes
Version 6.1.2 fixes
Version 6.1.0 fixes

Use the following procedure to burn your own CD from the ISO image:

The Readme for your HMC version lists information you need for verifying the successful download and installation of a corrective service package (PTF or fix). There is a section for each PTF at the beginning of the Readme, with the latest package listed first.

In addition, the "View" link for a PTF, on the Downloads tab, provides a quick link to PTF-specific information in the Readme.

Step 1. Install the corrective service

Caution:

As a safety precaution, IBM recommends that you back up critical console data. See your operations guide for more information on backing up the HMC.

Put the CD you ordered, or created from the ISO image, in the CD drive, and then follow these steps at the HMC interface to install the fix from the CD:

Select Licensed Internal Code Maintenance.
Select HMC Code Update.
Select Install Corrective Service.
Select Apply corrective service from removable media.
Select OK.

The HMC interface retrieves the update package from the remote CD and begins the installation process.

Step 2. Reboot

Reboot the HMC after the installation of the update has completed. Rebooting ensures that all changes are available immediately.

Step 3. Verify a successful update

After the HMC is rebooted, follow these steps to verify that the corrective service update was successful:

Select Help in the top menu bar.
Select About the Hardware Management Console.
Open the Readme version for the corrective service you installed.
Compare the "Splash panel information" listed in the Readme to the information for the fix displayed on the HMC.
