How to download and install individual IBM i Licensed Program Products (LPPs)

Problem

This document describes the process of downloading a Licensed Program Product (LPP) from Entitled Systems Support (ESS) and installing it on your IBM i using image catalog.

Resolving The Problem

First, use this link to determine what product you need to install:
Pick you release, then search on your product.  This example uses 5770BR1 option *BASE, you can see that it is on B_GROUPx_01:

If you are unable to locate your product here, it is not on standard media, continue on and when you get to step 10, expand some of the other packages to see if your product is in them.
To download the media, go to the Entitled Systems Support (ESS) website, this example uses the Firefox browser, other browsers might look different. Note: If any assistance is needed with the website, go to https://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/ess/ProtectedServlet.wss#, and select the 'ess support' link on the page, or call 1-800-446-8989.

To download the media:
2. Sign in with your IBMid and password.
3. If you need to register your customer number, select "Register New" link, otherwise skip to step 5

4. Complete the required information to register your customer number or system serial number, when complete, click Entitled Systems Support:

5. Click My Entitled Software

6. Click Software Downloads:

7. From the drop-down:
  • Customers: Select your customer
  • Category: Select "IBM i"
  • Group: Select the Operating System release, and click the magnifying glass icon.

8. Select "5770-SS1 IBM i" and scroll to the bottom and click continue:

9. Confirm language group and click continue.  English and the most commonly used most languages are on Group 1.  To determine what group your language is in, use this link  https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/i/7.4?topic=reference-feature-codes-language-version

10. Click "packages" (not the check box) next to Then, check the box next to the media you want, in this case B_GROUP1_04 and click "continue".

11. Select "I agree"

12. Select the method of Download, in this example, the selection is "Download using your browser (HTTPS)"

13. Click the down arrow to download to your PC. DO NOT click the 'Download all links'.

14. Once the download completes, unzip the file from Windows Explorer. Right-click and select Extract .  You can select where you want it to be downloaded to.  By default it will go in a folder with the same name as the file.  Rename it to what you want, this example is going to use \IBMi_Media, then click Extract:

15. Next, from an IBM i command line, create a directory to put the image:
        MKDIR '/IBMi_Media'
16. To FTP the image to the IBM i, first click your windows start and type cmd to get a command prompt.
 
17. From the DOS prompt, use the following commands to log in and FTP the file to the folder we created in step 16:
  • cd     - use to navigate to the directory your file is in on your PC
  • ftp    - use your system name or IP address
  • Login by using your IBM i credentials
  • bin    - use to switch to binary mode
  • put   -  use to send the image to the IBM i

18. Now that you have the image on the IBM i, create an image catalog.  Use this command:
      CRTIMGCLG IMGCLG(BGROUP104) DIR('/IBMi_media')
19. Add your image to the image catalog:
      ADDIMGCLGE IMGCLG(BGROUP104) FROMFILE(B_GROUP1_04.udf) TOFILE(*FROMFILE)
20. Create virtual optical device OPTVRT01 if it does not already exist:
      CRTDEVOPT DEVD(OPTVRT01) RSRCNAME(*VRT) ONLINE(*YES) TEXT('text-description')                           
21. Vary on the virtual optical device if it is not already varied on:
      VRYCFG CFGOBJ(OPTVRT01) CFGTYPE(*DEV) STATUS(*ON)
22. Load image catalog:
       LODIMGCLG IMGCLG(BGROUP104) DEV(OPTVRT01)
       3920 Schiff
23: Use RSTLICPGM to restore your product, prompt the command and fill out the product, device, and option number:

24. The product does not have any PTFs installed.  Reinstall the last cume & group PTFs that you installed to make this product current with the rest of your system.
