IT40730: SQL BACKUP ERROR MESSAGE 'CTGGA2081, FAILED TO ENABLE LOG BACKUP'

APAR status

Error description

  • The SQL backup in IBM Spectrum Protect Plus version 10.1.9 is
    failing to enable log backups for databases.
    In the IBM Spectrum Protect Plus job log the following errors
    are displayed:
    SUMMARY,CTGGA2398,Starting job for policy sql_Backup (ID:xxxx).
        id -> <JOB ID>. IBM Spectrum Protect Plus ver. 10.1.9-2544.
     DETAIL,CTGGA2402,<SQL Instance> ==> [SQL_DB1]
     DETAIL,CTGGA2163,Enabling log backups of database: [SQL_DB1]
        Instance: <SQL Instance> Application Server: <IP-Address>
        Log Backup Destination: storage:<IP Address>
        volume:<spp_VOLUME_NAME> share_addr:<IP Address>
        share_name:vpool1_fsXYZ
     ERROR,CTGGA2296,Enable log backup failed for database <IP
        Address>-><SQL Instance> ->SQL_DB1:Last run for database
        [SQL_DB1] failed.
    
    The VIRGO log is showing following line:
     Error - agent_sql_log: <CTGGE1049> The log backup failed for
       database [SQL_DB1] on instance [<SQL Instance>], error [The
       process cannot access the file '\\<IP Address>\vpool1_fs1XYZ
       \SQL_Instance_PATH_SQL_DB1\<log_file_name>.trn' because it
       is being used by another process.].

Local fix

  • 1.Start an elevated command console at the SQL server
       <SQL Instance>
    
    2.Run the following command to clean up the log backup
       schedule:
        "C:\Program Files\IBM\IBM Spectrum Protect Plus\tools\sql
        \sqllogbackup.exe" delete "<SQL Instance>" "SQL_DB1"
    
    3.After the clean up following command will not report the
       alwayson database "SQL_DB1":
        "C:\Program Files\IBM\IBM Spectrum Protect Plus\tools\sql
        \sqllogbackup.exe" show

Problem conclusion

  • Fixed as issue that was causing duplicate log backup tasks for a
    SQL always on group databases. After applying the fix log backup
    will complete successfully.
