IBM Support

IBM ESS : IBM Elastic Storage System 5000 have incorrect drive FW that may impact system performance

Troubleshooting

Problem

The ESS release 6.1.2.2 for ESS 5000 contains incorrect drive firmware that may impact system performance if used to upgrade to the updated drive firmware.

Environment

ESS release 6.1.2.2. Previous versions are not impacted.

Resolving The Problem

  1. Skip the drive firmware upgrade step during upgrade or deployment of ESS 5000 systems with ESS version 6.1.2.2. Consult the ESS release 6.1.2.2 Quick Deploymen Guide for more details. Please contact support if the drive FW is already upgraded for necessary corrective actions.

  2. Download the firmware rpm gpfs.ess.firmware-6.0.0-17.ppc64le.rpm from the from the Fix Central using following link. This rpm contains the correct drive firmware. https://www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/swg/selectFixes?parent=Software%20defined%20storage&product=ibm/StorageSoftware/IBM+Elastic+Storage+Server+(ESS)&release=6.0.0&platform=Linux+PPC64LE&function=all#ESS%20Firmware

  3. Copy and save the rpm in /install/ess/otherpkgs/rhels8/ppc64le/gpfs/ directory of the EMS and ESS 5000 I/O nodes.

  4. Apply new firmware rpm in each node.

    cd /install/ess/otherpkgs/rhels8/ppc64le/gpfs/
    yum update gpfs.ess.firmware-6.0.0-17.ppc64le.rpm -y

  5. After the firmware is applied in each node, drive firmware can be upgraded using mmchfirmware --type drive command. See ESS Quick Deployment Guide and Scale RAID Administration guide for further details.
