Error description
The IBM Spectrum Protect server can crash when performing operations to cloud storage, such as tier-to-cloud. The crash is due to an out-of-memory condition that occurs within the JVM (Java virtual machine). The first three line of the call-stack from the crash hold the important evidence to diagnose the cause of the crash and will be similar to: #0 0x0000XXXXXXXXXXXX in getStringUTFChars () from /opt/tivoli /tsm/server/bin/../../jre/lib/amd64/compressedrefs/libj9vm29.so #1 0x0000XXXXXXXXXXXX in jvmGetJavaThrowableString (env=env@entry=0x38e9000, exception=0x7f2808348b88, getString=getString@entry=0x7f28e3cfb610 "", strLength=strLength@entry=200) at jvm.c:940 #2 0x0000XXXXXXXXXXXX in jvmExceptionCheck (env=0x38e9000) at jvm.c:2147 The subsequent lines in the call-stack are variable will be dependant on the operation performed at the time of the crash. The Java heap is not actually full when the crash occurs, an SDCLOUDJ server trace will have the line similar to: [jvm.c][1765][JavaSideTrace]: com.tivoli.dsm.cloud.api.CloudHandler$1 run Memory update: 2147483648 bytes total, 2147483648 bytes max, 459070848 bytes free, 1688412800 bytes used. The "bytes free" shows a good amount of space. SHOW JVM will also show there is available memory. The root cause of the crash is IBM Java APAR, IJ30974 (https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/apar/IJ30974) A fix for IJ30974 is in IBM Java 8.0.6.26. IBM Java 8.0.6.26 is included in IBM Spectrum Protect Server versions 8.1.12.200 and 8.1.13.0 and higher When the issue caused by APAR IJ30974 occurs a defect in the IBM Spectrum Protect server code results in the server crash. This APAR will address and prevent the IBM Spectrum Protect server crash. The fix for IJ30974 is required to address the underlaying issue with Java.
Local fix
Apply IBM Spectrum Protect Server version 8.1.12.200 or 8.1.13.0 or higher to obtain the fix for Java APAR IJ30974.
