IT39247: PCOM: 14.0.X UPGRADE FROM 12.0.X ENDS WITH 1603 ERROR

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• We are upgrading PCOM 12.0.2 to PCOM 14.0.2.  We are using SCCM
  silent install and we receive the 1603 failure on some machines.
   We configure SCCM to reboot after receiving a 1603 and then run
  the PCOM package again but this doesn?t always work.
  
  we use this command:
  setup.exe /SuppressReboot=Y /S /W /V"REBOOT=ReallySuppress
  USEINI=XXX.ini /L*v c:\Pcom1404Inst.log /qn"
  
  The install log shows:
  ------
  Product: IBM Personal Communications (x86) -- Error 1406.Could
  not write value Profile Directory to key \Software\IBM\Personal
  Communications\CurrentVersion\Preferences.  System error .
  Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact
  your support personnel.

Local fix

  * not allow the installing user access to this registry key    *

Problem conclusion

• PCSINST.DLL has been changed to not overwrite the Preferences
  registry key value on an upgrade and not create the Preferences
  registry key value on a fresh install. The registry key value
  will be created when the user launches the PCOMM session after
  the install is completed.
