Certain 10K/15K Enterprise drives are exposed to an issue which can cause premature drive failure.
A firmware fix is available and recommended, but the system software must be at least 7.8.1.13, 8.2.1.12, 8.3.1.3 or 8.4.0.2 before upgrade the drive firmware.

The following drives are affected:

The firmware level in the first column includes the fix to prevent premature drive failure. The latest firmware in the second column also includes other fixes for less severe issues.
These drives must only be upgraded if the system software contains a fix for APAR HU02221, to prevent possible drive failure during firmware upgrade.
APAR HU02221 is included in the following software versions:
- 7.8.1.13
- 8.2.1.12
- 8.3.1.3
- 8.4.0.2
- 8.4.1.0 and all later versions.
Drive upgrade procedure
1. Upgrade to a software version containing APAR HU02221 (listed above)
2. If on 8.5.0 or later, download the standard drive microcode package from Fix Central, which includes the fixed drive firmware.
If on 8.4.x or earlier, the firmware is NOT included in the standard drive microcode package, so download a special package from Fix Central, using the links below.
3. Apply the drive firmware to the affected drives.
