Recommendations on Upgrading from PowerVC 2.0.0 or 2.0.1 to PowerVC 2.0.2

Question & Answer

Question

What are the recommendations for Upgrading from PowerVC 2.0.0 or 2.0.1 to PowerVC 2.0.2?

Cause

With the release of PowerVC 2.0.2 on September 17, 2021, customers at PowerVC 2.0.0 and 2.0.1 have the opportunity to upgrade. While the decision about whether to upgrade is one customers are advised to make on their own, we do have some recommendations to help guide your upgrade decision and processes.

Answer

Before you upgrade, check environment requirements
PowerVC 2.0.2 was released on September 17, 2021, and comes with many enhancements. You can install it on a new system, or if you are currently on 2.0.1, you can upgrade to PowerVC 2.0.2 though a backup and restore process. Make sure to check the 2.0.2 install requirements for 2.0.2 before upgrading.

If you are at PowerVC 2.0.0
If you are at PowerVC 2.0.0, we recommend that you first upgrade to PowerVC 2.0.1, put on all of the latest fixes for 2.0.1, and then upgrade from 2.0.1 to 2.0.2 using the  backup/restore process. Please follow our document, "Installing multiple PowerVC 2.0.1 ifixes simultaneously," which will speed up the fix install process by eliminating multiple required restarts.

If you are at PowerVC 2.0.1
If you are at PowerVC 2.0.1 and have a current case open to support for a performance, GUI, or other issues, you may be wondering if an upgrade to 2.0.2 is right for you. The key element to consider in this process is, again, if your environment is supported by PowerVC 2.0.2.  If you decide to upgrade, please follow our document, "Installing multiple PowerVC 2.0.1 ifixes simultaneously," which will speed up the fix install process by eliminating multiple required restarts. Then upgrade from 2.0.1 to 2.0.2 using the  backup and restore process.

Restore is only supported on one of the two PowerVC 2.0.2 offerings
PowervC 2.0.2 comes in two offerings, one for single node  (5765-VS2) and one for Private Cloud (5765-VC2). The backup and restore upgrade process is only supported for the single node PowerVC 2.0.2 version. If you have already installed 2.0.2, you can check the /opt/ibm/powervc/version.properties file, and if it says "offering=private_cloud" then you are on the Cloud version of PowerVC and restore is not supported. Here is such an example

    [2.0.2 Install]
    name = IBM PowerVC
    version = 2.0.2
    build = 20210911-0351
    oem = no
    install-date = 2021-10-20
    cloud_enabled = yes
    offering = private_cloud
    cluster = PVCNAME
If you decide to stay on PowerVC 2.0.1, stay current with fix packs

If you decide to stay on PowerVC 2.0.1, stay current by installing all of the latest fixes that have been created for it. If you have several fixes to install, we recommend the same process mentioned above for installing multiple fixes at the same time, and then staying current on fixes as they are released.

Remember to tune PowerVC for performance and scalability:
No matter which PowerVC you are on, if you experience timeouts or performance issues with PowerVC you will want to follow our Scalability and Tuning guides. The guides document the changes that should be made to your PowerVC/Openstack configuration files to enable PowerVC to run smoothly and with fewer timeouts.

  • PowerVC scalability configuration for 1.4.4
  • PowerVC scalability configuration for 2.0.0
  • PowerVC scalability configuration for 2.0.1
  • PowerVC scalability configuration for 2.0.2
