Error description

  • Applications installed into a Liberty JVMSERVER using CICS
BUNDLE resources are started sequentially. This is most
noticeable when applications take many seconds to start and
deferServletLoad="false" is set in server.xml. In such cases
the CWWKZ0018I and CWWKZ0001I messages written to messages.log
by Liberty will have the following pattern:

    [7/20/21 8:45:40:535 GMT] 0000006b
    com.ibm.ws.app.manager.AppMessageHelper I
    CWWKZ0018I: Starting application app1.
    [7/20/21 8:45:45:645 GMT] 0000006b
    com.ibm.ws.app.manager.AppMessageHelper A
    CWWKZ0001I: Application app1 started in 5.109 seconds.

    [7/20/21 8:45:45:757 GMT] 0000006b
    com.ibm.ws.app.manager.AppMessageHelper I
    CWWKZ0018I: Starting application app2.
    [7/20/21 8:45:50:826 GMT] 0000006b
    com.ibm.ws.app.manager.AppMessageHelper A
    CWWKZ0001I: Application app2 started in 5.069 seconds.

    [7/20/21 8:45:50:834 GMT] 0000006b
    com.ibm.ws.app.manager.AppMessageHelper I
    CWWKZ0018I: Starting application app3.
    [7/20/21 8:45:55:914 GMT] 0000006b
    com.ibm.ws.app.manager.AppMessageHelper A
    CWWKZ0001I: Application app3 started in 5.079 seconds.

The thread identifier, 0000006b in the above example, shows the
applications all use the same thread one after another to start.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All CICS users. *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: WAR, EBA and EAR applications deployed *
    * to a Liberty JVMSERVER using BUNDLE *
    *                      resources start sequentially.           *
    ****************************************************************
WAR, EBA and EAR applications are installed into a Liberty
JVMSERVER using BUNDLE resources. The BUNDLEs are enabled
causing CICS code running in the JVM to call Liberty to start
the first application. The first application initialises using
the thread that made the start call. As a result CICS is unable
to call Liberty to start the second application until the first
    application has completed initialisation.

This problem is most evident when the webContainer element
in server.xml specifies deferServletLoad="false" or the
applications take many seconds to start.

Problem conclusion

  • CICS has been updated so that WAR, EBA and EAR applications
deployed to a Liberty JVMSERVER using BUNDLE resources are
started in parallel using threads from the CICS Liberty thread
    pool.
