5772 10G Ethernet Cable Specifications

Question & Answer

Question

Can a multi-mode cable work on a 5772 10G Ethernet card on an i5/OS400?

Answer

One should be aware that there are short and long reach fiber Ethernet adapters for Power Systems. These adapters and their internal transceivers need to match the switches transceivers.

Short Reach adapter and Long Reach switches (and vise versa) will result
in wavelength mismatches.

IBM FC 5772 CCIN 576A 10GBASE-LR 1310nm transceiver. The LR stands for
Long Reach and runs at 1310nm wavelength. This requires Longwave (1310nm) 9/50 micron single-mode fiber network attachment .

FC5772/576E conforms to the 802.3ae 10GBASE-LR specifications for Ethernet transmissions over 1310nm single-mode fiber optic cable for distances up to 10 kilometers. Most switches have multi-mode, which is not compatable.

The Ethernet Line may fail to vary on - MSGCPI59B2 eccc10031a and srcB025A6E3.

Native i5/OS does not support a multimode cable and/or card 5771/573A, VIOS can handle multi-mode.
