Troubleshooting
Problem
Voice over IP (VoIP) is not supported with IBM Facsimile Support for iSeries.but with data areas it may work
Resolving The Problem
A new phone option is available for users who purchase a controller box and connect their phone lines, modem lines, and multiple PCs to it. It allows them to dial over the Internet for phone calls, and it ultimately saves on long distance calls. This feature is not supported with IBM Facsimile Support for iSeries because of hardware restrictions. All of our supported hardware options support only analog phone lines with RJ11 connections. They also require Rings and Tones per the T.30 fax protocol.
Updated Information: Though VoIP is not supported with Facsimile Support, some clients have been able to use VoIP by lowering the line (transmission) speed of the V.34 modem. To lower the line speed for a V.34 modem that is configured for use with Facsimile Support, you should create a data area as described in Rochester Support Center knowledgebase document N1016366, Data Area to Lower Line Speed for V.34 Modems: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas8N1016366 .
If a decision is made to use the VoIP lines, the following must be verified in regards to the VoIP system. (Note: This type of setup has been found to work with the data areas in place):
o Is T.38 Fax defined and supported?
o Is it using G.711; in other words, is it using a low compression Codec, such a G711 U-LAW, and echo cancellation is enabled?
