HIPER: Possible undetected data loss when adding a copy to a recently-expanded volume

APAR HU02327 is an issue where adding a volume copy of a previously mirrored, recently expanded volume can lead to undetected data loss under certain conditions.

Content

When adding a volume copy to a volume that:

  • Is fully allocated
  • Was previously mirrored (meaning that the existing vdisk copy ID is not zero)
  • Has recently been expanded and is still formatting
there is a chance for undetected data loss on the volume.

This issue affects 8.2.1, 8.3.0 and 8.3.1 code levels. 

Workaround

This issue can be avoided by ensuring that the volume format is complete before adding the volume copy. The progress of the format can be monitored with the lsvdiskprogress command on the CLI (the progress will be blank when the format has completed), or by checking the progress of the volume format from the GUI. 

Fix

This issue is fixed in 8.3.1.6, 8.4.0.0 and later.

It will also be fixed in a future 8.2.1 PTF.
