Upgrading the HMC from Version 4.3, 4.4, or 4.5 to Version 6.1.3

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document provides instructions to upgrade the HMC from Version 4.3, 4.4, or 4.5 to Version 6.1.3.

Resolving The Problem

Follow the instructions in this document to upgrade the HMC from Version 4.3, 4.4, or 4.5 to Version 6.1.3.

Prerequisites

oOrder the set of HMC V6 R1.2 Recovery DVDs from IBM by using this link: MH00919.

OR

Download the ISO images for the HMC 6.1.2 Recovery package using the following links, HMC_Recovery_V6R1.2_1.iso and HMC_Recovery_V6R1.2_2.iso, then burn the iso images to DVD-R.
oBack up critical console data. As a safety precaution, IBM recommends that you back up critical console data before performing the upgrade. The backup can take several hours to complete. Expand Licensed Internal Code Maintenance > HMC Code Update > Backup Critical Console Data. It requires DVD-RAM media (-R, +R, -RW, and so on cannot be used).
oVerify the internal modem compatibility with HMC 6.1. To verify the internal modem compatibility with HMC 6.1, do the following:

1.Determine the HMC model.

The internal modem compatibility determination applies to HMC model 7310-C04 and 7310-C05. If your HMC is any other model, or if it does not contain an internal modem, then proceed with the upgrade. Otherwise, continue with the next step.
2.The following corrective service package has been created to identify whether a 7310-C04 or 7310-C05 HMC may encounter the compatibility problem. You can either download and burn the iso image to CD-R media; or you can order the CD from IBM.

HMC Version 4: MH00854 Click here to Download and burn the iso or to order the CD

Install the corrective service package MH00854:
a Put the CD you ordered, or created from the ISO image, in the CD drive
b Select Licensed Internal Code Maintenance.
c Select HMC Code Update.
d Select Install Corrective Service.
e Select Apply corrective service from removable media.
f Select OK. The HMC interface retrieves the update package from the CD and begins the installation process.
g Reboot the HMC after the installation of the update has completed.
3.Run the monkacpid command in a restricted shell terminal at the HMC.

To open a restricted shell at the HMC, right-click on the desktop, select Terminals and then rshterm.

Type the following command:
monkacpid (enter)

The following is a sample output of the command, which is refreshed every 4 seconds:

Every 4s: /usr/bin/top -s -b -n 1 -p 3                  Thu Sep 14 14:57:19 2006

Press ctrl+c to exit the monkacpid screen.
4.Verify the %CPU value. If the number in the %CPU column is greater than 10.0, contact IBM Hardware Support and reference ECA 832 to order a replacement modem.
Upgrade Procedure (from Recovery Media)

You must perform a Save Upgrade Data task to preserve information on the HMC before upgrading to HMC 6.1.2. You must upgrade immediately after the Save Upgrade Data task. If you restart the HMC again without doing the upgrade, you must log in and run the Save Upgrade Data task again before you perform the Upgrade.

Do the following at the HMC interface to upgrade your HMC by means of the Recovery DVDs. This procedure works for Version 4.3.0 and above.
1.Select Licensed Internal Code Maintenance.
2.Select HMC Code Update.
3.Select Save Upgrade Data, and then insert a formatted DVD-RAM media into the DVD drive.
4.Select the DVD drive, and then click Continue.

Note: In some HMC versions, you must log on the HMC as a user with the hmcpe role; otherwise, the DVD option is not selectable.
5.Wait for the Save Upgrade Data task to complete. If the task fails, contact your next level of support before proceeding. If the Save Upgrade Data task is successful, you might still want to use the following optional procedure to verify the data:

a Open a restricted shell terminal as follows:

1 Right-click on the desktop area.
2 Select terminals.
3 Select rshterm.

b Issue the command mount /media/cdrom.

c Issue the command ls –l /media/cdrom.

d Verify that there are 5 tar files with the following names:

ACMSaveData.tar
RSCTSaveUpgrade.tar
SaveCCFWUpgradeData.tar
SaveHSCSystemUpgradeData.tar
SaveProfileDataUpgrade.tar

If any of these tar files are missing, contact your support representative.

e Issue the command umount /media/cdrom.
6.If the Save Upgrade Data task is successful, remove the DVD-RAM, insert the first V6.1.2 recovery media into the DVD-RAM drive, select the Console menu option, and then select Exit.
7.Click Exit to display the Exit Hardware Management Console window.
8.Click Reboot Console.
9.The HMC reads the media in the DVD-RAM drive and displays the Install/Backup/Restore wizard window. Select Install (do not select Upgrade), and then click Next.
10.Select Install from media, and then click Next.
11.Click Finish to start the Upgrade process.
12.When prompted to insert the next media, remove the first media, and then insert the second media into the DVD-RAM drive.
13.Select Option 1, and then press the Enter key to continue the upgrade.
14.When the second media is complete, the following options are displayed:

1 Restore critical console data from DVD-RAM (Install)
2 Restore upgrade data from DVD-RAM media (Upgrade)
3 Finish the installation

Insert the DVD-RAM containing the upgrade data that was created in Step 4, and then Select Option 2, Restore upgrade data from DVD-RAM media (Upgrade), to complete the Upgrade.
15.The HMC restores the data preserved by the Save Upgrade Data task.
16.The HMC then completes the booting process, during which you are prompted to select the language and keyboard mapping.

Verifying a Successful Update

After the HMC is rebooted, do the following to verify that the HMC upgrade was successful:
1.Select Help in the top menu bar.
2.Select About the Hardware Management Console.
3.On the About panel, verify the following information:

The Version is 6.
The Release is 1.2.
HMC Build level 20070201.1
","base_version=V6.1.2

Installing the 6.1.3 Update

Important Note: HMC 6.1.X update packages consist of multiple CD updates. All update CDs must be installed.

At the HMC interface, do the following for each of the update CDs:
1.Select Licensed Internal Code Maintenance.
2.Select HMC Code Update.
3.Select Install Corrective Service.
4.Select Apply Corrective Service from removable media.
5.Insert the first update CD into the DVD drive of the HMC.
6.Press OK to start the update.
7.When the first CD completes, the HMC displays a completion message and a check box to Install the next corrective service when you select OK. Remove the first CD, select Install the next corrective service when you select OK, and then click OK. The HMC returns to the Install Corrective Service screen.
8.Insert the next CD, select the Apply Corrective Service from removable media radio button, and then click OK to continue the update.
9.Repeat Steps 7 and 8 for each remaining CD in the Update package.
10.After the last CD completes, the HMC displays the following message:

The corrective service file was successfully applied. Wait until all tasks complete and Manually reboot the HMC for the changes to take effect, or select the check box below.

Remove the last CD, select Automatically reboot the HMC when you select OK, and then click OK.
