IBM AIX: Excessive logging and high CPU usage by syslogd with smbc

How To

Summary

When the SMB client smbc.rte is used on AIX®, an excessive number of log messages might be written to the syslog kernel facility, with syslogd consuming a lot of CPU time.

Objective

Disabling smbc syslog logging resolves the problem. However, if other problems occur with smbc, syslog logging may need to be temporarily re-enabled for diagnostic purposes.

Environment

The issue is most obvious when SMB shares are heavily used.

Steps

Note:  These instructions only apply to the 7.1.302.3 (or higher) version of smbc.rte.
Run this command to temporarily disable syslog logging by smbc. The effect is immediate--a reboot is not required. If the system is rebooted, smbc will resume logging messages to syslog.
smbctune -s "smbc_enable_syslog=0"
To disable syslog logging now and after rebooting, add the -p flag to the command in front of the -s flag.
smbctune -p -s "smbc_enable_syslog=0"
To temporarily re-enable syslog logging by smbc, run this command.
smbctune -s "smbc_enable_syslog=1"
