Resolving The Problem
This document lists and describes the communications status and its descriptions.
Communications Status Definitions
As a start, the hierarchy of the line, controller, and device objects are as follows:
| o | LIND Describes the link to the remote system/controller. This is the physical link description (token-ring, SDLC, Ethernet, and so on). It also provides the characteristics of this link. |
| o | CTLD Describes the remote system or controller (PU in VTAM). Provides the characteristics of the target like the Control Point for APPN, timers and capabilities. |
| o | DEVD Describes the physical or logical device (LU in VTAM). Describes the personal information for the connection, such as device types, and fully qualified name. |
Status Descriptions for Lines:
| VARIED OFF | The system is not using the line description for communications. Only one line description can use a physical resource at any one time. |
| VARY ON PENDING | The line is being varied on. During this time the system puts the task in place that manages communications over the line. The operations per communication type vary depending on the line: Non-switched SDLC or BSC line: The system raises the DTR signal and expects the modem to raise the DSR signal. X.25 Line: The system attempts to communicate with the X.25 network. Token-Ring: The line is inserting into the Token-Ring Network. Ethernet: The line is connecting with the Ethernet Segment. When the process is complete and the correct signals have been received the line will change to a status of VARY ON. A message is placed on the QSYSOPR message queue, indicating that the line has been varied on successfully. This same message occurs for switched SDLC lines which change to VARIED ON status for a very short time. Almost immediately, the switched lines change to a status of CONNECT PENDING to indicate they are waiting for a switched connection to be established. If there are errors during these operations, a message describing the error is placed on the QSYSOPR message queue and information in the history log (QHST). The status of the line becoming RCYPND. |
| VARIED ON | The tasks that communicate over the communication line have been put in place by the system. In addition, the system has the capabilities to communicate with the data-circuit terminating equipment (DCE) for non-switched lines because the activity described for the VARY ON PENDING status has successfully finished. Switched lines change to a CONNECT PENDING status waiting for the switched connection to be established. |
| CONNECT PENDING | This status is shown only for switched SDLC, BSC or ASYNC lines. The line is in this status while waiting for the switched to be established. |
| ACTIVE | The line is successfully placed in VARIED ON status. In addition, the line has one or more attached controllers that are in a VARY ON PENDING status or higher. |
| RCYPND | Error recovery is pending for the line. If the line shows this status, a message indicating what error occurred on the line appears in the QSYSOPR message queue. The operator can reply to the message. |
| RCYCNL | Error recovery is cancelled for the line. The message that was posted in QSYSOPR message queue was responded to with a C. |
| FAILED | An error occurred for the line that can be recovered only by varying the line off and on again. Typically, this indicates that the communications resource defined in the line description is not physically connected to the communications equipment. |
Controller Status:
| VARIED OFF | The system is not using the controller description for communications. |
| VARY ON PENDING | The controller is in the process of being varied on. Controllers on non-switched lines have this status after you use the VRYCFG command with STATUS(*ON), but the lines to which they are attached have not yet reached the VARIED ON or ACTIVE status. The further significance of this status differs, depending on the protocol used and if the controller is switched or non-switched. SNA non-switched SDLC or X.25 controller: The controller has this status after you use the VRYCFG command, and the controller is exchanging IDs (XID). Some host connections require the activate physical unit (ACTPU) request is sent by the system when the controller shows this status. Switched SNA controllers: The controller shows this status while waiting for a switched connection to be established -- the switched connection being physical (such as SDLC) or logical (such as token-ring, Ethernet, or X.25). When these operations are completed successfully, the controller goes VARIED ON. A message will be posted in QSYSOPR indicating the status. |
| VARIED ON | The controller completed the operation described for the VARY ON PENDING status. |
| ACTIVE | The controller is successfully placed in VARIED ON status. |
| RCYPND | Error recovery is pending for the controller. If the controller shows this status, a message indicating the error that occurred appears in the QSYSOPR message queue. A message will be posted that can be replied to. |
| RCYCNCL | Error recovery was cancelled for the controller. The message in QSYSOPR was replied to with a C. |
| FAILED | An error occurred for the controller that can be recovered only by varying the controller off and on again. Information indicating the error that caused the status appears in the history log (QHST). |
Device Status:
| VARIED OFF | The system is not using the device description for communications. |
| VARY ON PENDING | The device is being varied on. All device types have this status using the VRYCFG command with STATUS(*ON) for the device, but the controller to which it is attached has not yet reached the VARIED ON or ACTIVE STATUS. When the controller has reached the VARIED ON or ACTIVE status the further significance of this status varies depending on the device type. SNA Host: Device stays VARY ON PENDING until the controller to which they are attached becomes VARIED ON or ACTIVE after which the system expects to receive an activate logical unit (ACTLU) request from the host. APPC: Device stays VARY ON PENDING until the controller to which they are attached becomes VARIED ON or ACTIVE. For APPC devices, the system determines if the device needs to receive an ACTLU request. RWS (except type 3277 with model *DHCF, finance devices, and remote printers): Devices stay VARY ON PENDING until the controller to which they are attached becomes VARIED ON or ACTIVE after which the system sends an ACTLU request for the device. |
| VARIED ON | This status description varies depending on the type of device. SNA Host: The device has sent a positive response to the activate logical unit (ACTLU) request and is waiting for the application to be started. APPC: APPC devices have this status for a very short period of time during internal system processing. The APPC device can bind sessions independently of any user program state. RWS: The device has this status after the system receives a positive response to an ACTLU request. |
| ACTIVE | This status description varies depending on the type of device. SNA Host: The device has a status of ACTIVE when a file has been opened and a session has been successfully established by a job. APPC: The APPC device has this status if it is prepared to handle APPC sessions. The Display Mode Status (DSPMODSTS) command must be used to display the status of any session. RWS: The device stays ACTIVE if a display file is successfully opened for the device. |
| SIGNON DISPLAY | The subsystem has allocated the device. The sign-on display is not necessarily shown at the display station if there are other communications errors. |
| RCYPND | Error recovery is pending for the device. A message is posted in QSYSOPR message queue that can be responded to. |
| RCYCNL | Error recovery is cancelled for the device. The message in QSYSOPR was responded to with a C. |
| FAILED | An error occurred for the device that can be recovered only by varying the device off and on again. |
