ASCII Data Transfer Enhancements

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document explains additional options available when using Client Access and iSeries Access Data Transfer downloads in ASCII text format.

Resolving The Problem

Starting with Client Access Express V5R1, new options have been added to the Data Transfer from AS/400 ASCII file type. Common requests for the ASCII file type are to preserve trailing spaces, preserve leading zeros, and removal of the end of file (EOF) character. The new data transfer options allow this behavior to be controlled. These options can be accessed through the data transfer interface. After choosing the desired file on the iSeries Server, select File as the output type and click on the Details button. From the resulting window, choose the ASCII file type and click on the Details button shown to the right of the file type. The following options panel will be displayed:

This picture shows the options available when clicking on the Details button.

The following options available on this panel:

1.Truncate spaces from end of records

Sometimes the output file of a data transfer operation needs to be of a fixed length to satisfy requirements of a processing program. When trailing spaces are removed, consistent length is lost. To resolve this, uncheck the option to truncate spaces from the end of records. All trailing blanks in the source file will be preserved in the output file. The default behavior is to remove the spaces.

Note: This functionality was introduced with Client Access Express V4R4.
2.Pad numeric fields with leading zeros

Sometimes the output ASCII file needs to have the numeric values padded with leading zeros instead of blanks. Choosing this option will provide this behavior in the output file. By default, this option is not checked.
3.Include end of file indicator

At the end of an ASCII file, there is a character to mark the end of the file. Usually, it looks like a square box. This character may interfere with file processing programs and can now be removed during data transfer downloads. This can be done by unchecking the option to include the EOF character. Default behavior will append the EOF character to the end of the file.
