Troubleshooting
Problem
This document discusses how to set Ethernet line recovery limits to cause the IBM® System i™ system to recover without manual intervention.
Resolving The Problem
By default, the Ethernet recovery limits (CMNRCYLMT) are set to a count limit of 2 and a time interval of 5. These can be found only when
changing the line description. When the lind is using a 10/100 ethernet card (2838 or 2849) and the recovery limits are set at 2 and 5, the system
tries to recover the line two times within 5 minutes.
The line tries to recover every 5 seconds. With the default setting, the line goes to RCYPND after 5 seconds (one attempt immediately and then
another 5 seconds later). These values can be increased, but there is a chance that the line will go to a FAILED status and then service agent will
place a service call.
The customer should be informed that this could happen and they will then get a call from hardware asking if they are experiencing hardware
problems. The system can be set to retry infinitely by setting the limits to a count limit of 14 and time interval of 1. Because the system tries only
12 times per minute, it will never reach 14 and the system will continue to try the recovery if the line does not fail.

There are many reasons that the line could fail. This is mostly due to the state of the hardware buffers when the link is lost. Because these buffers
are not checked often because of code optimization's, they could be in an invalid state and cause the line to fail.
