F/C5706 and F/C5707 Ethernet Adapter Information

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document provides hardware information that is documented in the IBM eServer™ i5 and iSeries® System Handbook: IBM i5/OS® Version 5 Release 3 May 2004.

Resolving The Problem

The following information is taken from the IBM eServer i5 and iSeries System Handbook: IBM i5/OS Version 5 Release 3 May 2004, GA19-5486-25, Pages 279 through 281.

#5706 PCI-X 1Gbps Ethernet-TX IOA (UTP cabling)

The #5706 is a 2-port 1000/100/10 Mbps Base-TX Ethernet PCI-X Adapter. The #5706 is a Full Duplex, dual ported, Gigabit Ethernet adapter designed with highly integrated components. This adapter can be configured to run each port at 1000 Full Duplex, 100, or 10 Mbps Full or Half Duplex data rates. This adapter interfaces to the system via a PCI or PCI-X bus and connects to a network using a 4-pair CAT-5 Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cable for distances of up to 100m. The adapter conforms to the IEEE 802.3ab 1000Base-T standard. The #5706 also supports jumbo frames when running at the 1000 Mbps speed.

The #5706 supports a function called Large Send or sometimes known as TCP Segmentation. This function offloads the TCP segmentation operation from the IP layer to the adapter for outgoing (transmit side) TCP segments.

The #5706 also supports a function known as Checksum Offload, which offloads the TCP/UDP Checksum Operation or workload from the CPU to the adapter.

The #5706 is the first IOA for the iSeries server that does not require a PCI IOP. The IOP functions are already integrated into the IOA. There are no additional restrictions of where the #5706 can be placed. The system recognizes IOP-less cards and handles them appropriately, regardless of where they are placed (in front of or behind IOPs).

Note the following restrictions:

o The 1000 Mbps speed is not supported in Half Duplex (HDX) mode.
o Systems Network Architecture (SNA) is not supported.
o A cross-over cable is not supported.

It is supported in all System i® (5xx) models with i5/OS V5R3.
Note: The 5xx models are not supported: 500, 50S, 510, 530, and 53S.
When used as a Direct Attached Adapter, order the #0643 rather than the #5706. The #5706 is a Customer Install Feature.

A combination of 1000M (1Gigabit) and Half Duplex is not valid on any gigabit Ethernet adapter

#5707 PCI-X 1Gbps Ethernet-SX IOA (fiber cabling)

The #5707 is a 2-Port Gigabit Ethernet-SX PCI-X Adapter that provides two 1 Gbps (1000 Base-SX) Full-Duplex Ethernet LAN connections with throughput on a standard shortwave multimode optical cable that conforms to the IEEE 802.3z standard. The adapter supports distances of 260m for 62.5 micron Multi Mode Fiber (MMF) and 550m for 50.0 micron MMF.

The #5707 supports a function called Large Send or sometimes known as TCP Segmentation. This function offloads the TCP segmentation operation from the IP layer to the adapter for outgoing (transmit side) TCP segments.

The #5707 also supports a function known as Checksum Offload, which offloads the TCP/UDP Checksum Operation or workload from the CPU to the adapter.

There are no additional restrictions of where the #5707 can be placed. The system recognizes IOP-less cards and handles them appropriately, regardless of where they are placed (in front of or behind IOPs).

The 2-Port IBM Gigabit Ethernet-SX PCI-X Adapter incorporates an LC type connector on the card.

Note: For optimum performance, place the adapter in a 64-bit PCI-X card slot whenever possible.

Note the following restrictions:

o Half Duplex (HDX) mode is not supported.
o SNA is not supported.
o A cross-over cable is not supported.

It is supported in Models 520 and 570 with i5/OS V5R3.

When used as a Direct Attached Adapter, order the #0644 in place of the #5707. The #5707 is a Customer Install Feature.

A combination of 1000M (1 Gigabit) and Half Duplex is not valid on any gigabit Ethernet adapter.

Basic Guidelines:
1Match the configuration of the 5706/5707 to the port configuration of the switch/hub. For example, if the switch is set to 100/Full, do not set the IBM® i5/OS® to Auto/Full. Set it to 100/Full to match the switch. Set the i5/OS to Auto/Auto if either of the switch parameters is AUTO (for example, switch=Auto/Full, OS/400=Auto/Auto).
2Use only the following combination of i5/OS Line Speed and Duplex.

Auto/Auto Use with Switch/Hub that Auto-Negotiates
100/Full - Use to match switch/hub capability. Do not use with a switch or hub that is SET to AUTO-NEGOTIATE.
100/Half - Use to match switch/hub capability. Do not use with a switch or hub that is SET to AUTO-NEGOTIATE.
10/Full - Use to match switch/hub capability. Do not use with a switch or hub that is SET to AUTO-NEGOTIATE.
10/Half - Use to match switch/hub capability. Do not use with a switch or hub that is SET to AUTO-NEGOTIATE.
The 5706 has two Ethernet ports with two LEDs per port. The top LED is GREEN when transmitting data. The bottom LED is OFF, GREEN, or ORANGE. OFF indicates it is not inserted or is running at 10M. GREEN indicates the port is running at 100M, and ORANGE" indicates the port is running at 1G.
