Find Jobs with Big Spooled Files (FNDBIGSPLF) Utility

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document provides information on the Find Jobs with Big Spooled Files (FNDBIGSPLF) utility.

Resolving The Problem

FNDBIGSPLF is a utility that can be used to locate large spooled files on an IBM System i system that are larger than a certain size, specified in 4K,

Caution: FNDBIGSPLF is not an Application Programming Interface (API). It is an unsupported utility used to find big spooled files, If an operating system spooled file cannot successfully be found using this utility, IBM is under no obligation to diagnose nor fix this utility.

    • - Getting the FNDBIGSPLF Utility from the Attached Save File

To restore the Find Jobs with Big Spooled Files (FNDBIGSPLF) utility from the attached save file, create a save file on the operating system, detach or download the save file from this document, upload the file to the operating system using FTP from an MS-DOS prompt and then restore the objects. The resulting FNDBIGSPLF save file contains the following objects:

      ObjectTypeAttributeOwnerSize
      FNDBIGSPLF*PGM
      QSYS100K
      FNDBIGSPLF*CMD
      QSYS4K

There are four versions of the FNDBIGSPLF save file attached to this document. The version that must be detached/downloaded depends on your version of OS/400 or i5/OS:

      File NameDescription
      fndbigsplf.savfContains a change that is specific to V5R2M0 (R520) OS/400 and above. This save file should be used for V5R2 OS/400, 5.3 (V5R3M0 or R530) i5/OS, 5.4 i5/OS, 6.1 i5/OS and 7.1 i5/OS.

      fndbigsplf.savffndbigsplf.savf
1.Create a save file called FNDBIGSPLF using the following command:

CRTSAVF  FILE(QGPL/FNDBIGSPLF) TEXT('Save File for FNDBIGSPLF Command')
      2.Detach or download the fndbigsplf.savf file. This is an i5/OS save file containing the version of the FNDBIGSPLF utility for V5R2M0 (R520) OS/400, V5R3M0 (R530) i5/OS, V5R4M0 (R540) i5/OS, 6.1 (V6R1M0 or R610) i5/OS, or 7.1 (V7R1M0 or R710) i5/OS.
3.Bring up an MS-DOS Command Prompt.
4.Use the CD command to connect to the folder that contains the fndbigsplf.savf file (for example, type CD C:\TEMP if the fndbigsplf.savf file was saved in the Temp folder).
5.Type FTP <iSeries-system-name> to start an FTP session to the operating system. Sign on using your operating system user profile and password.
6.Type BIN at the FTP prompt to force the data transmission to binary data.
7.Type CD QGPL at the FTP prompt to connect to the QGPL library on the operating system.

Note: If this fails with an error that says library QGPL was not found, it could be caused by the FTP attributes on the System i™ system being set up with the Initial name format (NAMEFMT) parameter set to *PATH rather than *LIB. In other words, FTP may be set up to connect to the Integrated File System rather than to the library structure. Use the Change FTP Attributes (CHGFTPA) command to check on this, change the setting, or try typing CD /QSYS.LIB/QGPL.LIB.
8.Type the appropriate SEND command at the FTP prompt to send the save file from the PC to the FNDBIGSPLF save file on the system:

      QUOTE SITE NAMEFMT 0
      SEND FNDBIGSPLF.SAVF FNDBIGSPLF

      or

      QUOTE SITE NAMEFMT 1
      SEND FNDBIGSPLF.SAVF FNDBIGSPLF.FILE
9.Type QUIT to end the FTP session.
10.Type EXIT to close the MS-DOS Prompt.
11.Use the DSPSAVF FILE(QGPL/FNDBIGSPLF) command on the operating system to verify that the file has been uploaded to the operating system successfully. If unsuccessful, repeat Steps 1 through 8 above.
Once the fndbigsplf.savf file has been successfully uploaded to the FNDBIGSPLF save file on the operating system, restore the objects from the FNDBIGSPLF save file to the QGPL library using the following command:

      RSTOBJ OBJ(*ALL) SAVLIB(QGPL) DEV(*SAVF) OBJTYPE(*ALL)
             SAVF(QGPL/FNDBIGSPLF) RSTLIB(QGPL)

      • - Running the FNDBIGSPLF Command

Once the Find Jobs with Big Spooled Files (FNDBIGSPLF) utility has been restored to library QGPL, you can prompt the FNDBIGSPLF command, enter the Minimum SPLF size in 4K (MINSPLFSZ) and Print report of splfs found (PRTREPORT) parameters, for example:

Find Jobs with Big Splfs. (FNDBIGSPLF)

         Type choices, press Enter.

         Minimum SPLF size in 4K  . . . .   256           1-2147483647
Print report of splfs found  . .   *YES          *YES, *NO

                                                                                 Bottom
         F3=Exit   F4=Prompt   F5=Refresh   F12=Cancel   F13=How to use this display
         F24=More keys

and then press the Enter key.

After the FNDBIGSPLF command has completed, display the resulting QPRINT spooled file to see if it has listed any "big" spooled files matching your criteria for minimum spooled file size.
