HMC Console Drops during Concurrent Firmware Updates

Troubleshooting

Problem

The HMC 5250 Console connection is dropped during the concurrent installation and activation of managed server licensed internal code. Any job that is running may be terminated.

Resolving The Problem

The HMC 5250 Console connection is dropped during the concurrent installation and activation of managed server licensed internal code. The console session may return one of the following errors:

00ff Unexpected error occurred - contact service
or
0020 Unknown HMC internal error - contact service

If console takeover/recovery is not enabled, the console job may be terminated when the console session drops.

This is working as designed. Concurrent activation requires that the service processor be rebooted. All communications between the HMC and the service processor are lost during the reboot. This includes vterm sessions to AIX or Linux partitions, 5250 console windows to i5/OS partitions, ASMI connections and the HMC-managed system connection. The last panel of the change wizard includes the warning that "all VTERM windows" will be closed. The virtual terminal sessions (VTERM) include 5250 console.

After the firmware activate completes, the HMC console session can be restarted.
