DS8000® Safeguarded Copy and Extent Space Efficient (ESE) FlashCopy® capacity sizing by using the CSM ESESizer or SGCSizer functionality

White Papers

Abstract

This white paper explains how to use the IBM® Copy Service Manager (CSM) ESESizer session type introduced with version 6.2.11 for DS8000® capacity sizing.
The CSM ESESizer session supports capacity calculations for DS8000® Extent Space Efficient (ESE) FlashCopy® and Safeguarded Copy. The new session queries the DS8000® Write Monitoring bitmap that was implemented with the DS8880 microcode release 8.5.4 and DS8900F release 9.1 to track all writes to each volume. The session provides two output files to simplifies capacity calculations.

Note: With CSM 6.3.9 and DS8900 microcode release 9.4 a new SGCSizer session was introduced. This session type requires less memory for CSM (see chapter 2.1.2 ESESizer session preparation considerations) and is recommended for a Safeguarded Copy capacity sizing if perquisites are fulfilled.

Content

The white paper describes how to configure the ESESizer session for querying the Write Monitoring bitmap, and how to do the capacity sizing based on the ESESizer output files together with the separate delivered Excel spreadsheets.

Three Excel spreadsheets are included to support the ESESizer session configuration and the capacity sizing based on the ESESizer session output csv-files:
1.)    A spreadsheet to create CSM copy sets files that can be imported into the session based on DSCLI commands lsckdvol or lsfbvol: “DS8000® Import dscli volume list to prepare CSM ESEsizer session copysets.xlsb”
2.)    A spreadsheet for ESE FlashCopy® or Safeguarded Copy capacity calculation for Fixed Block (FB) Volumes: “CSM ESEsizer CSV Output Files calculation for FB.xlsb”
3.)    A spreadsheet for ESE FlashCopy® or Safeguarded Copy calculation for Count Key Data (CKD) Volumes: “CSM ESEsizer CSV Output Files calculation for CKD.xlsb”

The Excel spreadsheets provide an easy way to make a capacity sizing for ESE FlashCopy® and Safeguarded Copy. After you used the spreadsheet, you know for the monitored volume range the required physical capacity. In addition, for Safeguarded Copy you get also the information about the required virtual capacity and the backup capacity multiplier for each volume. With that information you can prepare your environment for Safeguarded Copy or ESE FlashCopy®.
The paper is intended for IT specialists, Business Partners and clients, who plan a Safeguarded Copy or ESE FlashCopy® solution.
If you need support for a FlashCopy or Safeguarded Copy capacity sizing, contact your IBM representative.
Remark: For large DS8000 environments, we recommend involving IBM to support you during the setup of the monitoring environment, depending on your region contact either the IBM Advanced Technical Group (ATG) or the IBM EMEA Storage Competence Center (ESCC).
Note: We recommend that you use IBM Copy Service Manager 6.2.12 or higher to query the Write Monitoring Bitmap
