Generating and collecting an FSP or system dump on a non-managed or Novalink-managed POWER system

How To

Summary

This document outlines the steps to initiate and offload an FSP dump on a non-managed or Novalink-managed server.

Environment

All FSP-based POWER® servers that are not connected to a Hardware Management Console.

Steps

1. Insert a FAT32 formatted USB key into either FSP USB port;
Notes:
System can either be up & running (state = Operating) or at Standby state.

The blue-colored (USB 3.0) ports are not used in this case. USB keys are only recognized by the FSP when plugged into the USB ports colored in black (non-blue) on the FSP itself (USB 2.0).

If the USB key is recognized, it also gives a visual (colored flash) indication like the one shown on the following picture:

2. Connect a PC or laptop to ASMI:

3. Log in to ASMI (admin user authority is sufficient).

When the FSP dump is generated, message Operation completed successfully is displayed along with the associated dump ID.

3.2 Select USB-Enabled Service Functions. If the USB key is plugged into the correct USB port and if it is recognized, the following screen appears:

3.3 Select "Save error/event logs" and then select the available dump itself (by clicking the check box next to the dump ID).

Notes:
System administrator can use Save or Restore settings options in order to save or restore the FSP users and network settings when needed.
System, resource, partition dumps are collected the same way.

3.4 When the offload process completes, the following message is displayed: "Offloading Service processor dump FSPDUMP.SERIAL.DUMPID.DATEANDTIME: Operation completed successfully."

Notes:
If two or more dumps are available on the FSP, the one that is transferred to the USB key disappears from ASM once the offload process completes.
More than one file (dump) can be copied onto the same USB key at the time - the file (files) already placed on the key are not overwritten.
