Installing VIOS on External Storage Rather Than Internal Drive

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document describes how to install VIOS on External Storage rather than the internal Drive in the Blade.

Resolving The Problem

The Blade Readme says the following in the installation instructions:

Once the first "Welcome to the Virtual I/O Server" screen disappears, type 2 on the following screen to confirm this terminal as the console, and press the Enter key (the number is not shown on the screen). Type the correct number option for the language you want to use during installation. On the Welcome to BOS menu, choose Change/Show Installation Settings and Install. Select Option 1 to verify the correct disk unit is selected for installation. The SAS drive internal to the blade is detected as hdisk0, whereas any LUNs attached to VIOS are detected as hdisk1, hdisk2, and so on. Select Option 0 two times to start installing.

If you want to install VIOS on an external disk, select Option 2 rather than 1 to select the drive.

You will see a list of drives with >>>>1. hdisk(0). Select the drive you want to install to by typing the option number next to the drive and pressing the Enter key. Then, be sure to unhighlight the hdisk(0) by selecting Option 1 and pressing the Enter key. If you do not unselect hdisk(0), VIOS installs on both drives. The screens looks similar to the following:

Note: For performance reasons it is recommended that you do not install VIOS on the same drive as client partitions.
