Locate Load Source Drive after Backplane Replacement or Upgrade to POWER6 (or beyond) Server

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document describes how to locate the load source drive after a backplane replacement or upgrade to a POWER6 (or beyond) server.

Resolving The Problem

For stand-alone (no HMC to allow tagging of a load source resource) POWER6 (or beyond) servers where the backplane was replaced or the system was upgraded, you should use the following procedure to locate the load source drive:

1.

Perform a 'D' mode IPL from the I_BASE_01 Licensed Internal Code optical media.
2.Confirm the language feature, and select Option 2 Work with Dedicated Service Tools (DST).
3.Use DST to ensure the disk units, including the Load Source, are reporting properly, and that there are no errors which might prevent an IPL from disk. Correct any errors that are found. If no errors are found and the Load Source disk is reporting in correctly, continue to the next step.
4.From the Use Dedicated Service Tools (DST) menu, select Option 2 Work with disk units and press Enter.
5.Select Option 8 Update system vital product data to identify the location of the load-source disk unit. Press Enter.
6.The Update System Vital Product Data display appears. Press Enter to confirm that you want the vital product data to be written.
7.Press F12 two times. Then press 1 and Enter to exit DST.
8.Use the system control panel to perform a delayed power off.
9.Change the IPL mode to 'B' and power on the system to perform an IPL from disk.

Notes:
1.This procedure can be used to find a load source drive in an external tower. For example, a non-SAS load source drive could be in an external tower or moved to an external tower and attached to a POWER6 (or beyond) server that does not have any internal SAS drives or the server was ordered with F/C 0720 (FC0720) to specify the load source is in an external tower.
2.In addition to this being important in cases of backplane replacement, or upgrades, this has also come up for new customer orders that are supposed to come "pre-loaded' with SLIC, IBM i, or both.
3.SRCB2003110 (B2003110) may be displayed.
