Issues encountered while upgrading from Initiate MDS 10.x to InfoSphere MDM 11.6.0.11 with an SSL-enabled SQL Server database

Problem

This article describes workarounds to issues that you might encounter while upgrading from IBM® Initiate® Master Data Solutions (Initiate® MDS) 10.x to IBM® InfoSphere® Master Data Management (InfoSphere® MDM) Standard Edition 11.6.0.11. Specifically, the issues described here occur when your deployment uses an SSL-enabled Microsoft® SQL Server database (2017).  These issues were observed when using SSLv1.2.
There are two types of issues covered in this article:
  1. Errors installing InfoSphere® MDM 11.6.0.11
    You might encounter a failure of the Configure_MasterDataManagement madconfig script during the test_db_connection target. For example, you might see this error:
    com.ibm.im.mdm.install.validation.util.SQLServerService, The database cannot be connected. The driver could not establish a secure connection to SQL Server by using
    Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption, Error: "SQL Server did not return a response. The connection has been closed. ClientConnectionld:ebdfacf6-7c33-4c81-a432-803697a50dca
  2. Issues upgrading from Initiate® MDS 10.x to InfoSphere® MDM 11.6.0.11
    You might encounter a failure of the upgrade_virtual_mdm madconfig target.
