Cloudera Impala may describe views as tables when described by the Cloudera Impala JDBC driver

Troubleshooting

Problem

Cognos Analytics retrieves metadata from Cloudera Impala using the Cloudera Impala JDBC driver.

Cognos Analytics will call standard JDBC API methods such as DatabaseMetadata.getTables to get objects of different types (i.e. TABLE, VIEW, ... ) from the underlying database server.

Cloudera Impala servers such as Impala 3.3 or 3.4 may cause the Cloudera Impala driver to describe a view as being an object of type TABLE.

While importing metadata using Framework Manager, a modeller may  see  views listed under the tree control node for tables. Should the modeller expand the tree control node for views they will not see the expected entries due to Impala describing them as tables.

Symptom

This stems from how Cloudera Impala interacts with it's own metadata catalog to obtain metadata associated to views.

In turn subject to how the Impala server describes those objects the Cloudera Impala JDBC driver will describe them as being either a view objects or table object.
