VIOS Physical Volume in Missing State

Troubleshooting

Problem

lsvg shows physical volume (PV) in "Missing" state.

Symptom

$ lsvg -pv rootvg
rootvg:
PV_NAME   PV STATE  TOTAL PPs  FREE PPs   FREE DISTRIBUTION
hdisk15   missing   63         15         00..00..00..02..13
hdisk0    active    558        558        112..112..111..111..112

Cause

I/O was lost to the physical volume (PV).

Environment

VIOS 2.2

Diagnosing The Problem

Check the disk status
$ lsdev -type disk
name             status      description
hdisk0           Available   SAS Disk Drive
hdisk15          Available   MPIO FC 2145

If disk shows in Defined state, run cfgdev and check status again. If it continues to be in Defined state, contact your local storage support representative.

If disk shows in Available state as shown above, continue with this document.

Resolving The Problem

If the PV (hdisk15 in this case) shows in Available state, use activatevg padmin command to change PV state from "missing" to "active". Note: the hdisk# must be in Available state before running activatevg command.

$ activatevg rootvg

$ lsvg -pv rootvg
rootvg:
PV_NAME   PV STATE  TOTAL PPs  FREE PPs   FREE DISTRIBUTION
hdisk15   active    63         15         00..00..00..02..13
hdisk0    active    558        558        112..112..111..111..112
