Objective

This document will guide you through a concurrent update of system firmware using an Enhanced HMC (V8.8.1 to V9 R2).

Environment

IBMi Power System with an Enhance HMC (V8.8.1 to V9 R2) software Update/Upgrade.

Steps

Requirements:

Pre-readiness check
 Check HMC Readiness for Firmware upgrade
 

From the HMC,

  • Select the “System” to upgrade
    • Select “Actions”
    • Select “Updates”
    • Select “View system Information”
  • Specify LIC Repository
    • "IBM Service web site"
      • Click "OK"
      • It will take a few minutes before returning results
  • The screen should show the "Current LIC repository location: IBM service web site
  • Click on "Close"
  • Your system is ready for the firmware update / upgrade

Concurrent  Firmware Update

With Readiness confirmed.

System is operating as normal

  • Select the “System” to update
  • Select “Actions”
  • Select:" Updates >> Change License Internal Code>"
    • Select "for the Current Release" for update

Click on "OK"
Select "start Licensed Internal Code Wizard"
Click "OK"

Select "IBM service website"
Click "OK"

Click "OK"

"Welcome to the Change Licensed Internal Code wizard" screen

Select "Next"

If doing an Update and the following screen appears,

Continuing with Update

Click on "Finish" and follow any prompts.

Verify firmware

On the green screen command line:

  • Run DSPFMWSTS
    • *Active and *Temp should be on upgraded firmware level

On HMC

  • Select “System” to verify
  • Select “Actions”
  • Select “Updates >> View System Information."
  • Select "None - Display current values"
    • Click "OK"
  • Verify installed, Active Levels
  • Click on "Close"
This concludes this procedure.
