LACP mode of bonding device might disable VNIC ports after LPM

Flashes (Alerts)

Abstract

The Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) mode of the bonding device might disable virtual Network Interface Card (vNIC) ports after you migrate a logical partition (LPAR).

Content

Linux Releases Affected
Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® 8.2

IBM Systems Affected
All IBM® POWER8® and POWER9™ systems that support vNIC.

Symptoms
The vNIC device is functional, but detached from the Link Aggregation Group (LAG). The issue is in the implementation of the link monitor in the bonding device. If the link monitor deactivates the subordinate vNIC device before the partition migration completes, the subordinate vNIC device might not recover after the migration is complete.

You can record the speed of the bonding device with the ethtool. The link speed of affected devices are not included in the total aggregate value. You might observe little or no recorded traffic on the affected devices.

Workaround
Avoid migrating a running system with LACP devices. You can recover inoperable devices by restarting the bonding device.

Fix Outlook
IBM is working with Red Hat to release a fix for this issue. The fix would come as part of a future Red Hat maintenance release. Open a support ticket with Red Hat if a hot fix is needed before the next corresponding Red Hat maintenance release.
