Potential loss of access or performance reduction when using VMware ESXi on Cisco UCS

News

Abstract

IBM has been notified of problems in Cisco's Native FNIC (NFNIC) driver that can result in poor performance and loss of access through unexpected all paths down conditions when used with VMware ESXi 6.7U1 or higher.

This issue is most likely to occur during a Spectrum Virtualize software upgrade, or during SAN maintenance activities.

There are no reported impacts for clients that use other operating systems on Cisco UCS. VMware installations on other hardware platforms are not affected.

Content

There are four reported issues in the NFNIC driver:
  1. Cisco CSvs36209: Cisco UCS NFNIC driver might not respond to ADISC requests sent by Spectrum Virtualize products. This issue prevents the multipathing driver recovering paths during maintenance activity such as an upgrade to the Spectrum Virtualize software.  If the paths are not correctly recovered, then the datastores might go offline with an All Paths Down (APD) state. This issue has also been known to trigger APD events during zoning changes in the SAN fabric.
  2. Cisco CSCvt45251 & VMware KB 78418: The Physical Address Extension (PAE) feature is disabled in the NFNIC driver. The lack of PAE functionality results in high latency to shared storage. This issue causes a high Kernel Average (KAVG) latency value in esxtop.
  3. Cisco CSCvu81080 & VMware KB 80181: Cisco Native FNIC (nfnic) driver may fail to properly login to fabric targets resulting in dead paths or APD. This issue has been known to trigger APD events during code upgrades of Spectrum Virtualize systems when the NPIV functionality is not in use.
  4. Cisco CSCvx72162 & VMware KB 85690: ESXi PSOD in ReportLun path - exposed when the target goes on and off continously.

Fix

These issues are resolved by upgrading the UCS to install the latest NFNIC driver versions.
