software category. You may find this information useful to install hardware
and software, upgrade to a different OS/400 release, upgrade your hardware
or migrate your data from one server to another.
- Hardware Management Console (HMC)
The HMC is a dedicated workstation that runs integrated
system management software. As with other software,
your HMC should be kept current. For HMC Fixes and update
information, refer to the HMC Code Updates or the Server
Firmware and HMC Wizard documents at Recommended Fixes:

GENERAL INFORMATION - OPERATING SYSTEM
--------------------------------------
This section contains general information concerning the
installation and operation of i 7.1.
5. 19 Jun 2013 APAR MA41984 contains information about PTF MF55464, which
affects tape device types HH LTO5 SAS, D/T5638, FC5638,
D/T7216 with feature number 8247. This PTF is required
prior to replacing the tape drive for any problems. Due to
its size, this PTF may fail to install if you do not have
enough contiguous free PTF storage. It is recommended you
install it by itself, not with any group or cumulative
package, to simplify recovery in the event of failure.
Accordingly, this PTF is being withheld from groups and
cumulative packages. If you experience failure "LINK/LOADER
ended abnormally. Completion code X'FFFF' qualifier
X'D4C6F5F5F4F6F30F'" while installing this PTF, contact your
provider of software service.
4. 04 Oct 2012 APAR MA42361 contains information about PTF MF56173,
which may be needed for systems with feature
code 2319 or systems with deconfigured processors.
http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas2MA42361
3. 11 May 2011 Function in PTF SI43585 will automate any extra
required IPLs when installing PTFs from a virtual
optical device or *SERVICE. An extra IPL can be
required when installing a PTF group, cumulative PTF
package, or a single PTF with a technology refresh
requisite to a technology refresh PTF (MF99nnn) that
is not already applied. To take advantage of this
function, PTF SI43585 must be active BEFORE
installing subsequent PTFs. Enter the following
command to determine if PTF SI43585 is active:
DSPPTF LICPGM(5770SS1) SELECT(SI43585)
If the status is Temporarily applied or Permanently
applied, the PTF is active. If the status is
Superseded, verify that the superseding PTF is
Temporarily applied or Permanently applied. If
PTF SI43585 is not found or not active, download and
temporarily apply PTF SI43585 BEFORE installing
subsequent PTFs. If you receive your PTFs on physical
optical media, it is strongly recommended that you
create an image catalog from the media and perform the
PTF install from a virtual optical device. This may
avoid multiple IPLs during the PTF installation. For
information on how to create an image catalog refer to
the iSeries Information Center:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/systems/scope/i5os/index.jsp?topic=/icbase/rzahg/rzah8updates.htm
(IBM i and related software->Maintain and manage IBM i
and related software->Use software fixes->Install
fixes->Step 3: Choose your fix installation
scenario->Install fixes from an image catalog).
