Use the IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client with the Microsoft Windows Preinstallation Environment (WinPE) to recover your Windows systems, including system state. The information below includes tips for backing up Windows systems, steps for creating WinPE bootable media, and steps for system recovery.
Successful recovery of a Microsoft Windows operating system relies on advance preparation:
- Ensure successful backup of the Microsoft Windows system state, other system files, and your mission critical data. If the backup is unsuccessful or incomplete, you cannot recover the system. For more information, see Best Practices for Backing Up Microsoft Windows.
- Prepare your recovery media in advance. Recovery media include the Windows Preinstallation Environment and the IBM Spectrum Protect backup-archive client. For instructions, see Creating Bootable WinPE Media for Recovery of Microsoft Windows Server 2016 and Microsoft Windows 10. The information is also applicable to Windows Server 2019.
- Test your recovery procedures regularly and often. The worst time to test your recovery procedures is during a live "system down" event. For recovery instructions, see Using Bootable WinPE Media for Recovering Microsoft Windows Server 2016 and Microsoft Windows 10. The information is also applicable to Windows Server 2019.
Tips:
- Keep your backup-archive software current. If you update the backup-archive client on your Microsoft Windows systems, create new recovery media with the same, or later, version of the backup-archive client software.
- You can use the backup-archive client to protect and recover physical and virtual machines. However, for virtual machines that are hosted by VMware or Microsoft Hyper-V, the preferred alternative is to use IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments.
- The preceding information for creating bootable media includes a script that automatically creates the WinPE image. You can use the same instructions and script to build images suitable for recovering Windows 7, Windows 2008, and later Windows versions.
