PH22020: RUN JOB ZPARM DDL_MATERIALIZATION ALWAYS_PENDING ALTER SET DATA TYPE ALTER ADD COLUMN SQLCODE = -20385

APAR status

Error description

• When ZPARM DDL_MATERIALIZATION is set to ALWAYS_PENDING, and a
  change includes an ALTER SET DATA TYPE and an ALTER ADD COLUMN,
  the run job does not include a REORG between them.  As a result,
  when the ALTER SET DATA TYPE statement is executed, and the
  table is placed in AREOR (Advisory REORG Pending) status, the
  ALTER ADD COLUMN statement fails with the following error:
  
  DSNT408I SQLCODE = -20385, ERROR:  THE STATEMENT CANNOT BE
  PROCESSED BECAUSE THERE ARE PENDING DEFINITION CHANGES FOR

  *                      between ALTERs causes the job to fail,  *
  *                      as the Tablespace is left in REORG      *
  *                      Pending state.                          *

  When the user sets the ZPARM setting DDL_MATERIALIZATION
  to ALWAYS_PENDING, and a change includes both setting a new
  data type and adding a column, the job requires a REORG
  between the 2 alters. Without this REORG, the run job fails with
  the following error:
