Abstract
Support of Dell EMC with IBM Storage Insights Pro and IBM Spectrum Control 5.4 (all versions).
Content
Dell EMC devices were tested with the following devices:
Supported Devices | Provisioning | Performance Monitoring |
Dell EMC Unity Hybrid (Unity 300 / 400 / 500 / 600) 1 Dell EMC Unity All Flash (Unity 300F / 400F / 500F / 600F) 1 |

Device Configuration:
- When you add a Dell EMC Unity device, IBM Storage Insights and IBM Spectrum Control collects data by connecting directly to the device.
Dell EMC devices were tested with the following SMI-S provider levels:
Provider | Supported Devices | Provisioning | Performance Monitoring |
EMC Solutions Enabler v8.4
EMC Solutions Enabler v8.3 |
VMAX3 Series 5 VMAX2 Series 5 VMAX 5 |
No | Yes |
EMC VNXe 2 Operating Environment (OE) level 3.0 and above
|
VNXe3200 VNXe1600 |
No | No |
EMC SMI-S Provider v4.6 and Solutions Enabler v7.6 |
VNX2 Series 6, 7
VNX1 Series 6, 7 Symmetrix VMAX2 Series VMAX1 Series 3 |
No | Yes 4 |
Device Configuration:
- When you add a Dell EMC VMAX, VNX, or VNXe, IBM Spectrum Control and IBM Storage Insights collects data by using the Dell EMC SMI-S Provider or Dell EMC Solutions Enabler.
- When you add other supported Dell EMC devices, IBM Spectrum Control and IBM Storage Insights collects data by using an SMI-S 1.2 agent.
Tips:
- Provisioning functions are not supported.
- Storage system data is probed and collected once every 24 hours, unless probe schedule is not daily, for example a weekly probe.
- For key concepts related to non-IBM storage like Dell EMC devices, check out Key concepts: IBM Spectrum Control support for non-IBM storage.
- Newer firmware levels are also supported. For IBM Spectrum Control, an upgrade to a later version might be required, particularly for new functions. IBM Storage Insights is automatically upgraded. If any problems occur when using newer firmware levels, open a support case. IBM Support will investigate the problem and attempt to resolve it. You can open cases for IBM Spectrum Control or IBM Storage Insights at https://www.ibm.com/mysupport.
Limitations and considerations
- Storage Insights supports monitoring a single storage device managed by EMC Solutions Enabler / SMIS Provider. Storage Insights does not correctly handle multiple storage devices managed by EMC Solutions Enabler.
- The interop namespace for all Dell EMC devices is /interop.
- Review the EMC Support Issues listed in the "Limitations and known issues for IBM Spectrum Control", for example: 5.4.3 Limitations and Known Issues for IBM Spectrum Control.
- 1 Virtual Volumes (VVols) are not yet supported and will be ignored while monitoring the device.
- 2 VNXe Series 1 models (3100, 3150 and 3300) are not supported.
- 3 Reports of thin provisioned storage have not been tested.
- 4 Refer to the known performance management and limitations documented for certain EMC SMI-S Provider 4.x / Solutions Enabler 7.x levels.
- 5 VMAX Embedded NAS (eNAS) is not supported.
- 6 EMC VNX Unified is not supported.
- 7 It is recommended to use EMC SMI-S Provider 4.6.2.9 (stand-alone SMI-S Provider, downloaded from EMC support site) for VNX Series devices.
