NDMP functionality in IBM Spectrum Protect and NetApp filers

Product Documentation

Abstract

You can configure IBM® Spectrum Protect™ to use the network data management protocol (NDMP) to back up data that is stored on NetApp® filers.

Content

For users of IBM Spectrum Protect V7.1.4, V7.1.5, and V7.1.6: For the latest instructions about configuring IBM Spectrum Protect in a NetApp clustered environment, see techdoc 617567.

For users of IBM Spectrum Protect V7.1.4 and all later releases: Before you configure IBM Spectrum Protect to back up data on NetApp filers, review the following tables:
To learn about the availability of specific functionality in IBM Spectrum Protect and NetApp filers, see the appropriate section of Table 1. Table 1 includes the following sections:

Required product versions
Data ONTAP features in a clustered environment
Cluster Aware Backup (CAB) operations Yes IBM Spectrum Protect V7.1.4 or later and Data ONTAP 8.2 through 9.3 P3. Starting with Data ONTAP 9.3 P4, IBM Spectrum Protect V8.1.7 or later is required.
Cluster-wide back up and restore operations Yes IBM Spectrum Protect V7.1.4 or later and Data ONTAP 8.2 through 9.3 P3. Starting with Data ONTAP 9.3 P4, IBM Spectrum Protect V8.1.7 or later is required.
Back up and restore operations at the storage virtual machine (SVM) level Yes IBM Spectrum Protect V7.1.4 or later and Data ONTAP 8.2 through 9.3 P3. Starting with Data ONTAP 9.3 P4, IBM Spectrum Protect V8.1.7 or later is required.
Back up operations to a non-collocated node (node-to-node operations) No
Tip: In the following rows, enabled features are also available for CAB operations in a NetApp clustered environment.
Backup methods
Base and differential back up operations
(levels 0 and 1, as defined in the NetApp documentation)
Yes All current releases.
Incremental back up operations
(levels 2 - 9, as defined in the NetApp documentation)
No
Directory-level back up operations Yes All current releases.
SnapMirror to Tape (SMTape) full back up operations Yes All current releases.
For details, see Table 2.
SMTape incremental back up operations No
File recovery
File-level restore operations Yes All current releases.
Direct-access recovery (DAR) of files Yes All current releases.
Direct-access recovery of directories No
Backup destinations
Back up operations to local tape Yes All current releases.
NetApp filer-to-server back up operations over a local area network (LAN) to native storage pools Yes All current releases.
NetApp filer-to-server SMTape back up over LAN to native storage pools Yes All current releases.
Three-way back up operations (in which a NetApp filer backs up data to another filer, which backs up the data to tape) No
Storage pool protection
Storage pool back up operations and moving NDMP data Yes All current releases.
Replicating NDMP data Yes Tivoli Storage Manager V6.3 or later, or IBM Spectrum Protect V7.1.3 or later. Data must reside in a native storage pool.
Data deduplication
Backing up NDMP data to container storage pools (without using the SnapMirror to Tape feature) Yes IBM Spectrum Protect V8.1.3 or later.

Mode and level of Data ONTAP Data ONTAP support for SMTape backup operations IBM Spectrum Protect support for SMTape backup operations
Data ONTAP 7-Mode, any level Yes Yes, in all levels of IBM Spectrum Protect.
Clustered Data ONTAP earlier than 8.3 No No.
Clustered Data ONTAP 8.3 and later, or Clustered Data ONTAP 9.1 or later. Yes (only if an SVM determines the scope of NDMP operations) Yes, in IBM Spectrum Protect V7.1.4 or later. You must configure the data movers by specifying TYPE=NASCLUSTER or TYPE=NASVSERVER.
