Question & Answer
Question
How can I update the JRE used with Rational Directory Server 5.2.1?
Cause
Rational Directory Administrator bundles an IBM SDK for Java (JRE) that is based on the Oracle™ JDK. IBM releases critical patch updates (CPU) based on Oracle's CPU updates which contain security vulnerability fixes for the JRE.
You can install Rational Directory Administrator 5.2.1 with Rational Directory Server 5.2.1.
Answer
Steps to update JRE on Windows Systems:
1. Download the updated JRE package from the IBM Support website. The link is in the Security Bulletin.
2. Extract the new JRE file to a folder.
Example: D:\setups\JAVA\8.0.m.n\ibm-java-jre-80-win-x86_64
3. Close all instances and folders of RDA 5.2.1 version. Upgrade may fail if any instance is running.
4. Stop the RDA WebAppsServer:
- Open the command prompt and navigate to the WLP bin folder location: <RDS_5.2.1_InstallationDirectory>/WebAppsServer/WLP_8.x/bin/
Example: C:\Program Files(x86)\IBM\Rational\ RDS_5.2.1\ WebAppsServer\ WLP_8.x\bin - Run the following command : server.bat stop. If you have already stopped the server, you will see either of the following messages:
Server defaultServer stopped or Server defaultServer is not running. - Close the command prompt.
6. Search for the line: set JAVA_HOME= <JRE_PATH>
7. Replace the existing <JRE_PATH> with the new JRE Path:
Example: set JAVA_HOME=D:\setups\JAVA\8.0.m.n\ibm-java-jre-80-win-x86_64
8. Save and close the server file.
9. Run the clean command and start the RDA WebAppsServer:
- Open the command prompt and navigate to the WLP bin folder.
- Run the command : server run --clean. You will see the following message:
The server defaultServer is ready to run a smarter planet.
