Error description
When applying certain GD&T feature frames with the semantic active (toggle off in options) there is no way to tell if this is a user error or software restriction. This occurs with the following GD&T using either the icon (failure) or the advisor (not listed): Two hole concentricity, plane to plane perpendicular, parallel surface (only advisor), circularity, symmetry, runout and total runout.

Comments
According to ASME standard, symmetry tolerances are always used with datum reference frame. When the creation of non semantic tolerance is not allowed, the syntax and the applicability of specifications created by using the "Geometric Tolerance" command are checked in accordance with the rules of the ASME Y14.5 M - 1994 standard. If the syntax is not correct or if the type of tolerance is not applicable to the selected feature(s) or if the definition of the tolerance requires additional information than the one contained in the callout (such as view dependent direction, projected tolerance zone definition), the creation fails with an error message. We do agree that this message is not very clear. It will be replaced by the following one with V5R8 : According to the ASME Y14.5 M - 1994 standard, the specification you are creating is not supported : Check its applicability for the selected geometric feature(s). Check its syntax. Check that no additional information (such as view dependent direction, projected tolerance zone definition) that are not contained in the callout are required. Use the advisor, if such information is required. You should be able to create it as non-semantic by switching the appropriate semantic control option in the Functional Tolerancing & Annotation Tools+Options settings. When using the advisor, only the types of tolerances that are applicable for the selected feature(s) are displayed. When selecting one tolerance type command, only the options and values that are applicable are proposed. There is no better way to document the behavior of the advisor than the ASME Y14.5 M - 1994 book itself. If you think that the advisor does not proposed all the applicable types of tolerance according to ASME standard or if you think that some options are not proposed for a given type of tolerance according to ASME standard, please open an incident. Note that you should be able to use non semantic tolerance to get the exact display of the tolerance you are looking for.
