DY46964: MPC ACTIVATION FAILS WHEN ONE WRITE OR READ SUBCHANNEL IS NOT OPERATIONAL.

A fix is available

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • MPC activation fails when one write or read subchannel is not
operational. In this case condition code 3 was received in
response to SSCH because the device was not physically there.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All using subarea MPC connections. *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: MPC activation fails if any of *
    * the WRITE or READ subchannels *
    * are OFFLINE at activation time. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: *
    ****************************************************************
The problem is summarized as follows:
    1) An MPC connection, configured with two or more READ/WRITE
subchannels, fails activation if any of the subchannels
    are OFFLINE during activation.
    2) During ACTLINK processing, all of the defined subchannels
addresses for the MPC link are allocated from VSE.
The channel allocation is successful even though they
may be OFFLINE. VSE does not perform channel path
    validation.
    3) After the channels are allocated, channel programs are
initiated. The OFFLINE subchannels receive a SIO CC3
    indicating they are unavailable.
    4) The ACTLINK request for each OFFLINE subchannel is
failed. This results in a SENSE 081C0000 being sent to
the console for the ACTLINK failure. The entire MPC
    LINE is brought down.
    5) This APAR is being taken to tolerate an OFFLINE MPC
channel at activation. The MPC connection will continue
with activation as long as one READ and one WRITE
    subchannel have successful ACTLINK processing.

Problem conclusion

  • ISTTSCM8 - Subroutine ACTLINK has been modified to tolerate
negative responses. Instead of going into
a takedown FSM upon receipt of a negative
response to an ACTLINK, the SCL_STATE for the
subchannel is set to SCL_INOP state. When all
the outstanding ACTLINK responses are received,
a scan is performed to verify there is at least
one available READ and one available WRITE
subchannel. Processing continues if an available
WRITE/READ are found. Otherwise, the MPC
connection is taken down with sense 081C0000 to
    the ACTLINK (as before).
ISTTSC8E - Included for maintenance purposes.
