Scenario 1: Open CATProcess1 (tool diameter: 10mm) In the tree unfold PO.1 / Manufacturing program.1 / Tool change Double click Multi-Axis Flank Contouring.1 Replay An error window pops up: Tool path computation error. Probable error location: Drive element number: 3 Axial level number: 1 Radial path number: 1 Impossible condition on the following surface A problem was found in the determining a final possition for the tool in relation to the following surface. Verify that you have not requested an impossible condition for applying the tool to the surface. ************* Scenario 2: Open CATProcess2 (tool diameter: 6mm) In the tree unfold PO.1 / Manufacturing program.1 / Tool change / Manufac... Replay the toolpath: Collision with the part. ************* Scenario 3: Open CATProcess3 (tool diameter: 12mm) In the tree unfold PO.1 / Manufacturing An error window pops up : Tool path computation error. Probable error location: Drive element number: 3 Axial level number: 1 Radial path number: 1 Ending possition failure The system cannot possition the tool. Some possible reasons are: Failure on drive 1: check the start element, try a manual reference point and manual direction to start. Failure on drive 2: check the start element and the drives order. Failure on other drive: the curvature+thickness of the Corner is greater than the body radius of the tool. .

Problem conclusion
THIS PROBLEM IS PERMANENT RESTRICTION IN CATIA Incident Diagnosis toolpath collision Restriction Explanation General comment on toolpath collisions: Almost faces selected as drives in FC5X are not ruled and therefore not fully flank millable... -> Isoparametric Machining with 89deg. tilt angle may be better solution. By-Pass 3 main problems were openned : 1/ Failure in toolpath computation (from left to right side) Comment about geometry : The 2 fillets have important counter drafts area. Drive.1 is really thin w.r.t. its height ( 30 mm). That is reducing the area to positionning the tool and make it difficult mainly in case of long tools Solution : => To define a maximum User Cutting length equals to the height of the drive (30mm) TP computation will succeed better 2/ Collision on the fillet Comment about geometry : The fillet is concave (along its height) and not ruled therefore not 100% flank millable. To tune the Contact Height parameter allow to reduce the gouging in dividing it up the drive but will never avoid it. Solutions : => From R13: In FC5X, user can select a global guiding curve (e.g. the upper contour of the drive) and ask to stay on 1 side of this curve 'if needed' (i.e. in case of collisions) This will avoid collisions but some material will be left. May be used for roughing => Advice: To machine this kind of not fully flank millable surface with Isoparametric Machining for finishing 3/ Toolpath computation from right to left side Comment about FC5X specifications : All geometrical elements selected as Drives, Parts or Start/End are ALWAYS extended for tool positionning. This case : We want to machine Drive.1 (U-shape) in going from Start to Drive.2 Drive.2 extension break Drive.1 sooner than expected. Solutions : => 2 Design tips : A/ To split Drive.1 into 2 elements (to use 2nd element as end on 1st element) B/ To create a small fillet between Drive.2 and Drive.3 (to limit extension) => NC ERD : To provide V5-user the capability to select locally which (1st or 2nd) intersection between Drive.X and Drive.X+1 he wants to take into account. (As in Sequential Flank in V4- MFGProg : intersection number on CS) .
