Error description

  • SKETCHER: BACKGROUND OPTION CAUSES PART
    TO BECOME CORRUPT.
    .
    SCENARIO:
    1. While in the Part Design workbench, create a
    part with a cylindrical pad.
    2. Create a new sketch. While in the new sketch,
select the ᄄpick visible backgroundᄄ icon. (Do not
select the ᄄdisplays the 3D elements in
    backgroundᄄ icon).
    3. Select the ᄄno 3D back roundᄄ icon to turn off
the 3D. Exit sketcher without changing the
    background option.
    4. After exiting sketcher notice the display does not
return to normal as expected and the sketch grid
can still be seen. The icon on does not indicate an
option is selected. This is the problem.
    .
    5. Selecting the ᄄpick visible backgroundᄄ icon and
then selecting the ᄄPickable visible backgroundᄄ
option will bring back the 3D geometry but will not
get rid of sketch grid. Notice Icon is still lit up.
    6. Selecting the icon and option again will turn off
the icon and part is ok. This is fine while in the Part
Design or Generative Shape design workbench
because user can tell the part is ᄄwrongᄄ
    7. Repeat the scenario while in the Functional
    Molded Part workbench.
    8. Upon coming out of sketcher, a problem is
apparent because the 3D elements are not visible.
Notice the sketch grid cannot be seen.
    9. The same workaround can be applied however
the user may not notice that the icon is still ᄄlitᄄ and
    will continue to work.
    10. Save the part without ᄄfixingᄄ the problem. This
is what a user would do if they did not know a
    problem existed.
    11. While still in the FMP workbench, reread the
CATPart. The part is now corrupt but if user stays
in this workbench there is no indication something
    is wrong.
    12. In the now corrupted part, try to create a line
of type Point-Direction. Select the point and use the
    XY plane for the direction.
    13. The following error PPT slide 8 is returned and
because when the XY plane is selected for the
direction, CATIA automatically also puts this plane
into the Support field instead of leaving the Support
as Default. Because the Functional Molded Part
workbench was used and the problem was not
corrected before moving on, the part is now
corrupt with no possible way of uncorrupting it.
Even deleting the sketch does not seem to fix the
part. The user now has the potential to lose days
worth of work. The only way for the user to see the
part is corrupt is either going
out of the FMP workbench or trying to create the
    line.

Temporary fix

Comments

  • THE PROBLEM WAS SUBMITTED ON :
    CATIA VERSION 5 RELEASE 16.
THIS PROBLEM IS NOT REPRODUCIBLE ON :
CATIA VERSION 5 RELEASE 18 GA level.
    .
    Incident Diagnosis:
Actually there is no corruption of the data. When
you are in sketcher, launch some 2d mode, and
then change to other workbench for example GSD
or part design 2d mode is still kept. The grid you
see if of the work on support created due to
2dmode, not that of sketcher. Since the icon on the
Tools toolbar is not updated it gives wrong
impression that 2d mode is not ON. But if you see
from the drop down list of 2d mode commands,
you can notice that 2D mode is indeed active.
    .
    Reason:
The problem has been fixed and:
    1. After exiting sketcher, display returns to normal
and sketch grid is not shown.
    2. The part does not get corrupted anymore.
