How can you reimage the XGS appliance with PXE image?

This video will explain product specifications and assist with the initial installation of the IBM Security Network Protection for VMware.

Set-up requirements:
  • VMware Workstation is needed on the system used to perform the reinstall.
  • Create a Virtual Machine with a minimum of 2GB memory.
  • Choose four virtual E1000 Network Adapters for the VM.
  • Set first virtual network adapter as bridge mode and the other three as host-only or other.
  • Serial console cable is needed for connecting to the XGS console port.

Procedure:
 
  1. Download the Recovery PXE Image iso from the IBM Download Center. Go to My Software Download > IBM Security Network Protection (XGS) > XGS5100 (for example), some models don't include a Recovery PXE Image > 5.3.2.1 (for example), some firmware versions don't include a Recovery PXE Image > IBM Security Network Protection Firmware v5.3.2.1 Recovery PXE Image.
     
  2. Connect the XGS via the serial console cable to the system from which you are reimaging.
     
  3. Start VMware Workstation and add the iso image to the virtual CD slot on the virtual machine.
     
  4. Power on the virtual machine.
     
  5. Wait untill VMware screen shows the following message:

    VMware detected
    pxeserver login:

    This means means the PXE server is set.
     
  6. Reboot the XGS appliance from the LMI.
     
  7. Select to boot from LAN by typing the letter L when prompted during the startup process.
     
  8. When prompted, type Ctrls + S at the next screen. If the next screen is black, enter it anyway.
     
  9. Wait untill the XGS boots from PXE boot. The boot process is complete when you arrive at a boot: prompt.
     
  10. Enter the command: reinstall
